Default Tank size?

Hey, curious as to the size of a 96 accord's gas tank. It says like 17 gal or so in the manual, but when I fill it from empty I get a lousy 12 galons max. Was wondering if that's the size or if my meter is off?

I'm not sure about this, but: 1.) when you gage reads "E" you in fact have couple of gallons left in the tank so people won't run out of gas so frequently, 2.) your level isn't giving a totally accurate reading, 3.) they supply that size of tank on certain models.

So should I not worry about the tank until that little gas light is on? It makes me weary because as soon as the gauge gets below half a tank, it drops about twice as fast as when it's above half a tank - so I'm just a little leery with my gauge.
I've never seen my gas light on ... though

I can second that... my buddy and I actually went driving for 7 hours around town just to see how many gallons my car could hold (long story.. it was a bet and I won.. anyway) ... 2001 Accord EX. after 8 hours (had to eat and ****) and an empty tank he hauled me to the nearest gas station and I filled it up and let the auto-shot-off determine the size of the tank. .... 17.1 gallons

Btw... the fuel light did come on around 2-3 gallons. which is about 85 miles for me around town.

side note: it was actually alot of fun trying to find out how fast I could get my car to eat gas

17.1 and if you go low enough to get the E light, you should be able to put in about 15 or so gallons. I've done this a few times but not lately. If you get only 12 or so something else is up. Wait until the E light comes on however since guage needles are notoriously inaccurate, meaning it's way past the F when you fill it up and it seems to go down fast when it passes the halfway mark

Excellent!!! I've been waiting for someone crazy enough to test the tank size. I have a 2004 Accord Sedan (with a 17.1 gal tank) and when the E light comes on I drive another 25 miles (which is what I usually get per gal. - city driving) and I only get to put in 13.5 gallons. I was really wondering if that 17.1 was true or not. Thanks for the knowledge, I really appreciate it.
Just wondering, so many people on this site have warned me NOT to let it go bone dry because of problems it might cause to the engine and other parts of the car. Did anything go wrong with yours that you noticed so far?
As a side note, I exceeded the manufacturers limitation on highway driving for the tank in the month of July. I filled up in IL and went up to WI over the 4th. I drove the car on and off for 4 days. I did the math on miles driven divided by the number of gallons I was able to put in the car on empty and reached an astounding 36 MPG. (the sticker says 34 MPG) VERY COOL.

Yah I was warned about driving the car bone dry too. I always fill up with 91 octane (damned CA gas...) but after it went dry I added 1 bottle of octane booster and 1 bottle of fuel injector cleaner... runs smooth as silk still.. my mileage is still around 31 mpg highway It used to be 26mpg but that was before the tuneup.
