Low End Gains
Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards. I recently bought a Honda Accord 99 EX 4 cyl. I know a lot of basics about cars, but I'm definately no expert (like some of you here). I was wondering what kind of mods are good for a car like mine, mostly interested for low end gains instead of high end. Any suggestions are appriciated! Thanks!
Torque is hard to come by in Hondas. What is wrong with fun high revs? Most aftermarket stuff actually increases high end horsepower and sometimes takes away a bit of torque. So really the cheaper mods won't help too much. Sorry.
A short ram intake is a good start..they are made for lower end performance as opposed to the higher end of a cold air intake. You can find several here. You will get some HP gain, but not much with just an intake. You should get an exhaust as well to even it out.

Those two will probably give you the most low-end. Other mods like intake, header, or exhaust give you better flow for high-end horsepower. </TD></TR></TABLE>
turbo is ur best bet...those things can make a honda a killer machine in the low end...and the high end, but not toooooo high

If you want torque, drop in a 3.8--GM, Mitsu, Chrysler, Ford--or a VW turbodiesel. Honda engineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrring is more into power at high revs. That said, I am amazed at the relative low end grunt that my 2.4 has, far more on the low end than last (6th) gen 4 or 6 I had, both of which had about zero anything below about 3000 rpm.

Save your money, the money you spend on I/H/E/C for more power will give you minimal gains and I doubt you will feel anything... you will most likely hear a change but that is about it. I have a 4 cylinder 2001 accord and was disappointed with the gains after putting on an ebay shortram, DC sports header, and Apexi WS 2 catback system. It was louder, but hardly any faster. I switched back to my stock setup very quickly
Also DO NOT get aftermarket pulleys, you will most likely mess up your electrical system or cause your battery to drain or any number of issues. Honda engines are very efficient, you will not be able to free up much power without major work.
If you wanted low end torque get a fast spooling turbo setup, just be prepared to pay for the lost fuel economy, CARB and smog issues. I bought an accord because it is reliable, saves gas like a champ, and has respectable power for an engine of that size (in a higher rpm range though).
You could just sell your current car and get the new Accord Hybrid 6 cylinder... Great power AND fuel economy

Pullies are fine. As long as you change only accessories and do not change the alternator pulley. That's where people screw up and their car goes haywire.
Pullies will net you 1-2 hp but will be much better on acceleration.

Put a bottle of NOS in the car, have the system kick in as soon as he taps the gas pedal, lotsa torque at that point

Unorthodox Crank pulley... I think this will be my next add on

crank pulley upgrades will hurt your engine over time unless they have a harmonic dampner, or you have your whole engine assembly balanced with the new pulley.
save your bearings imo, its not worth the small amount of increased power output.
you want low end power you should try a small turbo based fi setup... other poweradders will do it to but I like the snails best.
otherwise you want more torque than that, you gonna have to buy something with some displacement next time.

First of all, Small won't fit because it's a length ways engine and Honda's are sideways, and for real lower end torque, you'll need aluminum Forge pistons with compression ratio of at least 9:1, aluminum Flywheel, Stage 2(or 3) clutch, performance cam(Several stages for level of performance that really, really, really helps low end torque), new performance valve-train(To prevent floating Valves), either a fast(really fast) spooling turbo setup <U>and/or</U> a modified supercharger, Ramjet intake, New headers, hi flow cat, cat-back system, Any nice gripping racing tires for your rim, Bigger Diameter Rims and tire, and anything I must've left out? Ohh yeah, Hi-volume fuel pump, injectors, fuelrail. Also Upgraded computer management and new senors(Exp: Oxygen senor).
Now you may be blown away with the large list of things to get but to properly take advantage of what you want out your 4-Cyl. engine, a lot of these components rely on other components to be most efective.

Not true. Cold air intakes do better in the low end that short rams. The reason? The longer tube of a CAI has a lower resonant frequency, inproving the ram charging effect at a lower RPM.

Does the 95 Accord EX engine have a harmonic dampner?

I agree with this...say a small 454 in the back seat, hooked to the latest Powerglide, rear wheel drive, kinda like the Little Red Wagon. Would improve odds of getting hired to do a vroooom vroooom vroooom ad on TV.
