Relocating the Cig lighter... any thoughts?
Since I need the damm thing for two reasons I thought I would ask.
Has any one relocated the Cig lighter to a different position?
I had this in mind, but not sure if it can be done.
From the stock location to the center of the fake botton that does nothing...

Do you think it can be done???

My only concern with this application Bbasso, is that if you ever needed to use it to light a cigy, the material around the hole may be too soft/flamable for the heat generated by the lighter. That would suck if you melted a portion of your dash.
Can be done without much trouble...I suggest not using your stock one. Instead, get one from a junkyard or autozone...etc.
As far as how to secure it in there, use a backstrap bracket and find something to bolt it too. That should work fine.

Damm, Ya had to say that. I had that in the back of my mind and hoping that no one would also think or say that...
As for the wiring, simple I know... but the mounting is what I was/is worried about.

Maybe if you could get it into a little piece of insulated conduit. I don't know the diameter of the cig lighter but do something like, cig lighter inside rigid conduit inside pvc. I'd test it before you put it in the car to see if the pvc melts or whatever your material of choice may be.

LOL, thats the fun of it though. To see if it works. Like the other guy said, get one from a scrap yard, then see if you can get it to work without burning down your garage. If you insulate it and nothing catches on fire or melts...then your golden. Next step is to mount it without making it look like hell.

Maybe one day if I can find the dremel and some bits in the garage.

After looking at picture number two a bit longer, I'm positive you can get it to work with minimal effort (which means you can be lazy!). The little black piece of plastic that surrounds the outer diameter of the metal on the lighter looks to be the same size as the diameter of the smaller circle on the fake button.
Do you smoke? Becuase if all you plug in is a radar detector you might consider relocating it to the glovebox or behind/above the glovebox. I only use the cigarette lighter on long road trips (only time I use a radar detector).
Having an accessory plugged in right behind the combination switch might look messy and or get in the way.
BTW your hands could lose some weight

what do you use the lighter for? (cell phones,,and stuff or actually light cigs)? if you use it only for accesories you might be ableto get of just adding extra wires in the back, then running it to your glove box or other hidden spot, then you still have the main one in the original location to light cig.

Smokers agree, plastic dashboards on fire cause lung cancer.
