At times the speedometer in my 95 civic will just drop off and stop working and at other times it will spike (say im going 80 when sitting still or read 20 on the freeway). When it reads at zero the odometer and tripometer stop working as well. Through all this the tachometer works fine. Any ideas?

yeap search for vss sensor, you should be able to find alot of thread similar problem as yours.
