autocross at hollywood park (rough lot) now strange sounds when moving
car: greddy turboed gsr with an itr lsd. 400lb/in spring rate in front with 3/4 stiff on konis.
during the practice event, we broke hard and at the same time, hit an uneven patch (like pot hole, but square shape) on the surface and heard a really loud *thump* like a bottoming out sound. it happend twice. now the car has a weird clicking sound, it clicks faster as the car moves faster. and the car shakes back and forth (left to right) slightly. i checked where the axle connects to the tranny on the right side of the car, and i can move it in and out about .5 inches. is this normal, bad, or is the problem something else?

Take a look under the car. Maybe the axle popped out. Maybe you busted a bearing in the axle. If it is an axle, just get a new one from autozone.

That's bad. The big CV bearing cups plugged into the side of the tranny have room for the axle to move in and out, but the outer end of the axle should be rigidly held to the brake rotor. If you can move the axle it's time to take them out for inspection.

sorry, im not sure what everything is called, but the actual axle (rod) doesnt move. just that "big CV bearing cup" thats inserted into the tranny (this is the diameter of a coke can right?) well if i put my hand around it and push, it goes in about .5 inches, but on the left side, it only moves in and out maybe a milimeter or so

Okay good, sort of...
What that means is the CV cup thingy isn't anchored as it should be to the tranny. That's done by snap rings on the cup assembly that snap into the differential, inside the tranny. If you're real lucky, it's just popped out, so give the thing a whack with a soft hammer and a piece of wood to drive it back into the tranny. Just make sure you don't pinch the CV boot and tear it. If it won't click back in place there's a chance the retaining ring came off (inside the tranny) and that means the axle assembly has to come out to put on a new one. The loose retaining ring, probably at the bottom of the tranny, *probably* won't be an issue... except in the case of high-G turns... like at an autocross...
