red bulbs for climate control, defroster, hazard in 96-98
i got an si gauge cluster for my 96 ex and want to change the rest of the bulbs to match. i know this has been done and discussed a million times, but i still have questions.
i have read how to's on painting the bulbs, but i just don't want to do that. so please don't suggest it.
for the climate control, i was just planning on ordering 2 bulbs for a 99-00 si (96-98 only has 2 bulbs, whereas 99-00 has 4) and putting those bulbs in my sockets, if that is even possible (i am assuming they are the same size bulb). the sockets are different, btw. but that still leaves the hazard button and the rear defroster button (and criuse control button, but i am eliminating cruise, so i could care less about that).
the bulbs for the hazard and defroster are VERY small, and you need a flat screwdriver to remove them (they are slotted), or some freakishly long fingernails (for a guy
)
the hazard button just uses a clear bulb and then must shine through the red cover so it appears red/amber. i am not sure about this though, because mine has been burnt out since i got my car, so i have never seen it. at any rate, i would think the 99-00 would be the same setup (w/ a clear bulb).
but this is where the problem is- the rear defrost button for the 99-00 is grouped with the a/c and recirculate bottons, and they are all lit with 2 of the larger, climate control sized bulbs. but the defrost on the 96-98 is seperate, and is lit with 2 of the very small bulbs, the same as the hazard. one of my defroster bulbs has a white cover on it, and the other has a blue cover (seemed a little wierd to me). i need those 2 small bulbs to be red/amber. to my knowledge, the 99-00 only uses a total of 2 of the small bulbs- one for the hazard and one for the cruise.
again, i am thinking the hazard uses a clear bulb, like the 96-98. so unless the cruise button uses a red bulb, i don't know what to do. please help!
and if anyone has part #'s, that would be awesome

I did a writeup on this in BauleyCivics Amber lighting thread.

there isn't much you can do about the hazzard button because it has a red cover on the inside of the button but the rear defroster button is pretty easey, just switch the two small bulbs. there is the one with the blue cap, that lights up white and the one with the white cap actually lights up amber. if you think about it when the defroster is on it is white but when u push the button in there is a little amber light that lights up above it. now the button will light up amber and when it is pushed in the on button will be white.
you can get the 99-00 neo wedge bulbs to do the climate controll but you can't actually use the bulbs, they come with an orange condom on the bulb, just take off the blue on thats on your bulb and put the orange one on.
hope that helps.

yes it does help, a lot.
i already took out the 2 small bulbs in the defrost and saw the blue and white caps. so the one with the white cap lights up amber, huh? so....i could put 2 bulbs with white caps in and the whole thing would be amber. it seems wierd that they have white caps though...whay not orange like the 99-00 neo wedge bulbs?
p.s.
just wondering, does the 99-00 si cruise control button lite up amber, like the gauges and everything else? if it does, what kind of bulb is in it?

thanks a lot. they do match well. but, those neo wedge bulbs (well, covers, actually) are the same as what is in an si, so they should match perfectly, no?
now, you switched the white and blue covered bulbs in the defrost switch, right? it looks like you switched them, but i can't tell for sure...

I bought si bulbs from honda and removed the amber condoms from them and swapped em over to my current bulbs
for the defroster I switched the bulbs and removed the blue condom so it was just "naked". Looked better that way to me

Yup, I painted the bulbs in my EG red, it looks pretty good. I just need to change the clock to red, and get a new cd player that lights up red.
