si cluster swap
i have a 91 civic standard and i want to put an si cluster in it. do i have to get the cluster from a 90-91 si or will one from the 88-89 work? also, in addition to the cluster unit itself, will there be anything else i need for the swap?

you should use the 90-91 it will be a direct swap. on the 88-89 it doesnt fit in the dash "hood" there will be a gap in the hood, and im not sure but i dont think it will plug right in
thanks, so the si cluster from 90-91 should just plug in where the current one come off? also, will the tach work right off the bat or will i need to hook up an rpm sensor thingy?

Any '90-91 cluster will plug right in and the tach should work without any extra wiring. You will probably want to swap out speedo units to keep the proper odometer mileage.
You don't need a cluster specifically from an Si; you can use a gauge cluster from any of the following cars, because they all have a tach (6500 RPM redline) and are identical:
'90-91 Civic LX
'90-91 Civic EX
'90-91 Civic Si
'90-91 CRX DX
'90-91 CRX Si
'90-91 Civic Wagon
'90-91 Civic Wagon RT4WD
The CRX HF cluster also had a tach, but with a redline of 5000 RPM.

I tried to put a cluster out of an 89 SI into my 89 hf, and nothing in the cluster operated properley...it pluged in but the bulbs for the dummy lights were all on..and the tach was crazy,,,would jump from like 2k to like 6k in only a sec...and was not anywhere close to being correct. Now to fix my problem...i used a cluster out of an 89 DX which had the same redline as the SI cluster..but the dummy lights were set up as the ones in the HF cluster, only without the little shift light.
However, your car beieng a std im not sure about wether u will have to run a wire for the tach of not..if not ...u can jsut get an aftermarket one

just did the swap...88-89 clusters will only work with 88-89 cars unless u do modification which is a pain...the 90-91 will fit perfectly into the 90-91 cars and the tach will work perfectly as well as the other lights and speedo if u got a good cluster
