Purchasing an ITR: What should I pay?
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out. I have my sights set on a 2000 Flamenco Black Pearl ITR with ~20K miles. The car has some very minor scratches and dings (like those common to daily drivers, but otherwise in great shape), a perfect interior, and is in an excellent working condition. The only modifications are a JDM shift boot and Honda Access Pedals, otherwise its stock. The car has never been tracked or autocrossed. The seller is asking 21,000 OBO and is in the Southeastern area. What is a reasonable price to pay for this car?? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies. Edmunds.com prices the car at $17,000 if it is sold through a private party and $18,000 if it is sold through a dealer (assuming the vehicle is in pristine condition). I understand that these prices are at the lower end of the scale, but I wasn't expecting them to be so far off what you guys suggested (~$20K). It looks like this guy has been trying to sell this car for over a month without any luck. I'm thinking of offering him $17,000 initially and letting him bump me up (maybe by a few thousand or so, but ultimately under $19,500). Does this sound reasonable??
Keep in mind that I live in Georgia, not California. If I'm not mistaken, Type-Rs may not command as high a premium in the Southeast as they may in SoCal or NY. Also, the seller attached O.B.O. ("Or Best Offer") to his suggested price of $21K. How much "give" do you guys think this may add to the price of the vehicle?
Who cares what you pay, as long as you buy an ITR. Sell your house, your car, your sister and buy a ITR. Thats my 2 cents.

Nice. It's too bad that I don't have that much money. Otherwise, I would buy a lower mileage ITR. Anyways, I'm trying to find one for under $20K. If you know of anyone in the area selling their ITR, let me know.
Thanks for all the replies. After I go see the car and verify that its in good condition, I'll probably offer him $17,000 and let him submit a counteroffer. However, that's $4,000 off of his suggested price. What can I say to substantiate this offer? (The only thing in my arsenal is the suggested retail price from Edmunds.com, which says that a 2000 ITR in excellent cond. is worth 17,000 private party) What else can I say?
edmund's, kbb, and nada will estimate the itr far less than it's worth. none of those sites take into account the itr was a limited production and those numbers have been decreased due to theft, crashes, etc. your seller will laugh at $17k, but he will probably entertain $19k. open with $18.5k, but plan to pay $19-20k.
Depends on the condition and mileage. Have a dealer check it out. I figure a 97-98 should go for anything from 17,000 on up
