Tranny Gone
i have an 02 Si and i haven't had any tranny problems as of yet. The only problem i had was one day it seemed as if i didn't have gears...like none of them would engage. As i coasted toward the side of the road they came back. I didn't have the problem again but it was the wierdest thing...

if this is your second tranny dying perhaps u should re-evaluate the way you drive. Could be cus of honda could be cus of you. Just best to cover all your bases.
I know that nowadays honda trannies arent what they use to be but thats odd to have two busted back to back.

I don't really understand why you EP3/RSX guys are always having these transmission problems.
Like the previous person said (redronin22).. that's true.
But, hell, you may want to check your driving. I'm not offending you or anything.. but, when I got my old 240SX, i was FORCED to drive it CORRECTLY. this car is soo sensitive, that if you don't match synchros correctly, it will let you know..
(It's not like other cars.. trust me on that one. I've driven EP3's and RSX's, and they are far easier to drive).
Anyways, do you match your synchros in time? Do you shift really hard, or just with the flick of the finger. (actually on your car you need the wrist lol. on mine u don't).
The last person I was in an RSX with... this guy didn't know anything about driving stick. He had the car since brand new.. put 3500 miles on it, and i still saw him driving wrong.
He wasn't matching synchros at all, grabbing the shifter with the grip of a baseball pitcher holding a baseball, forcing it in gear a lot of times..
Like.. i don't know to explain it, but every gear.. for example, let's say he was in 2nd .
He pushed it to 4500RPM.. pushed the clutch in with his foot on the gas a little bit.. so the car's basically in neutral while he's shifting, and the revs go up to like 4600RPM cuz he didn't let off the gas right..
then FLOPS it in gear hard, but not fast.. the revs are dropped to like 2000 something by now, and then he abruptly engaged the clutch ..
I could hear his differential a little bit after every shift he did like that.
I had to drive his car, and show him how to match his synchros (although i don't remember what speed the car runs in each gear.. the gears were pretty damn small and the shifter was pretty close though
)..
You know what I mean;
Shift at 4000 RPM.. let's say the car will go to 3000 RPM in the next gear.
Shift into the next gear lightly, when the needle's close to 3000, engage the car into gear slowly..
*Voila* no clunky noise, no jerK (although your cars don't jerk that much haha), and a perfect shift.
But yeah.. if you have gotten that and do it by nature without paying attention (like i would assume you have) you're good. If you haven't, you might want to try that out my friend.
I hope your next transmission doesn't fu--- up though. Good luck.
and sorry if this didn't help anybody.

Am I mistaken or isn't the point of synchros to eliminate the need for rev matching when shifting? Although rev matching may reduce wear on the synchros, I don't think that's the problem with the 02-03 civic si trannys. I've only ever driven manual cars (12 years of driving) so I know how to shift correctly, and I'm still having the same stupid problems as everybody else. It seems more like a manufacturing defect than driving technique...
while the car is in gear, does the shifter feel squishy moving it side to side? it could be a detent spring problem. or, like other people said, it could be your driving. i had a kid come to my dealer with trans problems and it was because he was beating the **** out of it and had never ( i repeat, NEVER) had driven stick before he bought the car. first we rebuilt the trans, then got him a new one, THEN put in a used one because honda wouldnt warrenty it again cuz he was abusing it and he didnt want to pay for a new one. anyways, long story short, if your driving it right, check the squishy feeling. it may just need new detent springs. also, like one member had said, honda isnt making trannys like they used to, BUT it is VERY rare when civics have tranny problems, ESPECIALLY the SI's. most times its just bad driving, but i dont know you or how you drive, so i'm not pointing any fingers.
