TIG welding Mild steel 18 gauge...
I made a tri-y header (I'll post pics of later) and I just could get the mild steel to make a pretty weld. I've got tons of experience with stainless and aluminum, but this steel crap is just plain ******* me up. Its a nice header, but the welds have a desire to look better. Anyone have any tricks? Purging would help. I clean the weld areas before welding with MEK and grind them with a DA. Just seems I can never get a golden brown weld.
My thoughts were that Mild steel sucks *** and that was the reason why it sucks..because it sucks.

My Tig'd mild steel welds look just like my Tig'd stainless steel welds, minus the pretty colors.
Pictures would definitely help diagnose the problem.

yeah, you'll never get good colored welds with mild steel. You can get some colors around the weld, but it won't be as noticeable as stainless. All my tig mild steel just looks gray, nothing special to it at all. just looks very organised
and yes, it sucks, it sucks huge

Ok...thats it. My welds look great, just they're grey and ugly. With stainless you get grey welds if you're too hot..so I was confused
