It could be bad news. This could indicate exhaust gas is entering the engine coolant system from a bad head gasket. I assume you've checked the coolant level.

Crank the cold engine, remove the radiator cap and acccelerate the engine to 2000 rpm. If water boils out of the radiator outlet, you have a blown head gasket.

good luck

How does the car run?
How does it idle?
Check your oil and coolant.

If the oil looks milky and your coolant is low you probably have a blown head gasket or cracked head. One of the signs is an engine that ides rough.

You may have a bad thermostat, gauge or sensor.
Maybe you just need to add coolant. When is the last time you checked it? If your car overheats it will expel some coolant that will need to be replaced.

You may even have a water pump going bad, although I doubt it...but Ive seen stranger things.

Do you have a book?
There are probably trouble shooting steps in there that can help you pin point your problem.

When you topped the coolant did you bleed the system?

Check it in a few days of driving around, along with the oil.

well that wasn't really the first time it happened, it happened b4, like a couple other time, so could it be the coolant not going through or anything?

It could be air bubbles in the cooling system. Just topping up the reservoir, that doesn't prove whether there's any air bubbles inside the system.

Turn your heater to FULL HOT, drive the car around a bit. Then after it cools down, squeeze the radiator hoses. Both of them. You shouldn't hear any air bubbles sloshing around. You should only hear the little pin rattling in the thermostat.

Then, maybe, your troubles might be from a stuck thermostat. How old is it??

Replace it anyway and find out if it solves your problem. The cost with gasket is about $12, and takes about 45 minutes to install. Symptoms you describe are a sticking thermostat, easy and cheap enough to find out.

After you rule out air pockets, you're left with the thermostat or the radiator.

You check your thermostat by taking it out & putting it in a pot of water with a thermometer. As you heat it up, the thermostat is supposed to open at the proper temperature (190F??). But once you've done the work of taking it out, you may as well spend the $10 for a new one.

Even if the problem is actually the radiator, you'll probably want a new thermostat to go along with it anyway.

are your fans running when the car was? i had the same problem a few weeks ago.....my steps were...
1) replace t-stat -- didn't work
2) flush/bleed coolant - didn't work
3) checked fans - noticed they weren't coming on when car was overheating
4) replaced switch on t-stat chamber - fans worked properly then (do testing before doing this)
5) flush/bleed coolant again

it's fine now. t-stat was $10 and the switch I replaced was $40 at john elway honda, seemed kinda steep but the fix for $50 didn't seem unreasonable at all.

how far did it go???
what was the air temp??
were you on the highway for a long time???

if its really hot (or any other form of extra strain) your engine will heat up more....my car will do it after im on the highway for 3+ hours....but itll only go to about the midway point...but my radiator is a whole nother story.....

its possible that you got air into your system when you replaced your t-stat, so you want to use the procedure that jim suggested and check that

Also unplug your Cooling fan relay(It tends to reset it) and plug it back in.
