96 civic dx changing the brakes
hey i did a search for how to change the brakes on a 96 civic dx hatchback and i couldnt find anything, so im sorry if this is a repeat. ok i have a few questions and im not that great with cars. im changing the rotors, calipers, and the pads on the front. i got the tire off and im looking at the rotor i see my four lugs and 2 phillips head screws. my guess would be that i unscrew the phillips head screws and the rotors should come right off. if im correct tell me. if not tell me what i have to do. thanks
Well, to remove the rotor you have to remove the Caliper, and the caliper mounting bracket.
So there's two bolts that hold on the caliper, should come right off, and the pads will be sitting in the bracket, you can leave the brake line/ebrake cables attached to the Caliper.
Then two more bolts hold on the caliper mounting bracket, pull it off.
Then you should be good to go to unscrew the two rotor screws.
Then replace all your stuff and reassemble, and bleed brakes.

Remove the two caliper mounting bolts and pull caliper away and hang with a wire hanger. The rotor screws are a bitch to get off. Try an impact driver to get them off. Mine were on there pretty good, dont strip them.
Pull rotor off and replace with your new rotor. Wipe them with brakleen to get off your fingerprints. Replace brake pads with the new ones and remount caliper the way you took it off. You might have to compress the caliper cylinder with a large c clamp before you can remount the caliper.

If I were you, I woulcnt use the small philips screw. Just align the rotor with your lugnuts when you take off and replace your wheels.

EZ outs or drill it out. Those are you only choices now. I vote for the EZ outs.

ok i drilled right thru the centers of the screws. so thos are out. but the big problem now is that the rotors wont come off. my guess is rust. but u never know. any comments on that

Honda recommends a rotor change at 80,000 miles. About every other brake pad change or every 2 at least, you shoud be checking your rotors for fade and getting them turned... after a while, the rotors are too thin for spec to be turned, so you need new ones... rotors don't last forever...
yea i just reached 80,000 mi. on my civic thats why im changing my rotors, pads, calipers, etc.. i know how to change the pads but the damn rotors wont come off. im bangin away with a hammer
lol but they arent budging. ill keep hammering at it until i finally get it. thanks for all ur guys input. it helped.... OHHH YEA I JUST WENT AND BOUGHT AN IMPACT DRIVER FOR THE OTHER SIDE. hopefully it will be a little bit easier.

You can take it to a shop like Pep Boys or Kragens... and prices to turn can go from 5-10 bucks a rotor or even more... brand new rotors (especially for base model civics) can be had for as low as 23 bucks I think
