Default New guy, couple of questions ( OBD, B18C5, Turbo etc )

Hi everyone, as you may notice, I'm new to this board and I'm also new to the world of import vehicles. I've had a 3rd gen F-Body for all my life now and I'm looking for a change. My decision isn't made yet, but an EG6 is in my list. In order to make the right decision before actually buying a new car, I like to learn about it. I've been reading the board for a couple of days now and I've learned a lot but even though I've learned a lot there is still a couple of things I didn't get a hold of, like the OBD thing, no idea what that is ( keep in mind my automotive knowledge is mostly about old V8's )

So, what this post is about is this. As I stated earlier in the post, an EG6 is in my list of choice for a new car and I have a few things that need to be cleared. The first thing people ask when giving advice is "what is the car going to be used for?" well my answer is this : mostly for the everyday drive, but also for the occasionnal pull down at the drag strip. I'd like to build my own turbo'ed B18C5 and I know what parts i'm gonna build it with, but I don't know what rod ratio to use in order to have maximum power in mid/high rpm and to safely shift @ 9k rpm
Also, Static compression ratio. I know I will have to use low compression ratio pistons in order to make max boost, but what sould I aim at? 8.0:1 8.5:1 ?

Engine management ?
Whoa, something really new here. Kinda far from the good ol' carb
So I have no idea what OBD is and I have absolutely no Idea what modifications ( or complete replacement ) I'll have to perform in order to get the most out of the engine. So this part is major for me.

The turbo
I'm not asking which brand of turbo to buy, but rather what A/R would be a good choice for my application.

The swap
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that to do an engine swap into a civic you basically have to do it backwards, lower the car on the engine. Is this right ?

So this is all I can think of right now, a whole new world for me, but I'm willing to make the plunge and "evolve" to the new era.
Feel free to educate me, but I'd like to have answers with explanations, not just a simple "well 8.0:1 is the best choice"

Welcome, learn to search, top right corner. helps a lot.

OBD= On board diagnostics, the old CRX's in japan and maybe the US ran on OBD-0, the civic eg6 as you put it runs on obd-1, 96-98 is OBD-2A and 99-00 is OBD-2B. Basically it makes sure everything in the engine is running good.

Basic mods for a B series engine include intake-header-exhaust. Getting a little more complicated people rebuild the top and bottom end. Valves, valve springs, valve guides, retainers, cams, roller rockers, forged pistons, resleeve, bore out, change your deck height, forged connecting rods ARP rod bots, upgrade head studs, baffle oil pan, balance and blueprint crankshaft, lightweight flywheel, clutch kit. its easier to study...im not aobut to explain hondas in 1 post.

searching is your friend, honda-tech has been around for awhile, and many people just like you come on this board fresh with no knowledge in their brain. and they get told the same thing as everyone else, just search. honda-tech has a huge archive full of answers to your questions.

what also helps is to click on 'archived' instead of 'recent' while searching. people tend to just search recent and come back saying 'i have searched!' when really there is more post that are truly helpful.

honestly if i were you i wouldn't go wit the type R motor I would go with a GSR one.. Its cheaper and pretty much set up for boost.

He is right. I went with a JDM Type R motor because I was going NA (Normal Aspirated). If you are planning to go turbo, the GSR is the best way to go among other setups IMO.
