welding galvanized steel or aluminized steel harmful?
There is a problem with the fumes put out while welding galvanized steel. Do it outdoors and don't keep your face too close.
There isn't a toxic problem with welding aluminized steel as far as I know. The problem you may run into however is that if gas welding, the heat spreads REAL fast and the puddle tends to blow out. If arc welding, you should be ok after grinding the aluminum coating off.

Yes welding galvinized steel will let off cyanide gas as a biproduct of the outter coating thats applied to the metal under intense heats. In small doses its not leathal and a simple painting mask is just fine. However if your going to be welding large areas for lengthy amounts of time, weather your tig welding or spot weldings different you are going to need a class 2 breather. It looks like a painting mask except its rubber and it has 2 frisbee shaped filters on each side. This will cut the levels of CN down to a safe amount.. Another thing to be smart about is this. Even though you have a mask on and hopefully goggles when welding if your going to be going under a car for a long period of time or whatnot weather its using a rosebud to bend or a torch to cut or the welder, you might want to consider goggles that dont let the gas in. Its an irritant as well. I work at a welding shop and when we weld under cars in our garage we have to wear full breathing material. Its the same in the laboratory i work at. CN gas is deadly so be very very carefull. No making smoke rings =p
Galvanized = puke
Like said before keep your head out of the fumes other wise you're going to puke/die, depends how much you inhale.

Me and a buddy are almost done building this halfpipe and I need to make the coping. Now, we have galvanized pipe that we are going to use. Will it be okay to tack a bolt onto this pipe with an arc welder? It should only take a few seconds to weld it up, will this be unsafe?

Yeah, I've heard that. I've been readin about it and it seems like it's fine as long as you don't stand right over what you're welding and you do it in a ventilated area.
I am going to just take the grinder to the area before I weld and when I weld it, I'll do it outside.
If you never see me post again, you'll know I'm dead from zinc poisoning.

i'll be welding outdoor also, so the fumes would disperse into the air rapidly. thanks guys!

if you grind the area on galvanize first it sometimes makes it easier but not always. If you start to feel a film on your tongue while welding it drink some milk or eat a banana. I've gotten sick from it before and let me tell you that having a fever of 102 and dry heaves suck. lasted 8 hours then I was fine but wasnt fun.
yeah, getting "galvanized" (that's what we call it) is no picnic. I had a severe fever and couldn't stop shaking for a whole night after a full day at my construction products job. Told the guys at work what happened the next day and they said it was from inhaling all the fumes from welding galvanized steel. They also suggested drinking milk...
if you're outdoors you'll be fine, but def use a respirator if welding that nasty ish indoors. Aluminized steel on the other hand doesn't seem to give off too much in the way of fumes...

wear a ******* mask for god sakes lol
get a resperator and just keep well vented. and grinding it is just as bad just the dust particles are bigger rather then the smaller particles that it gives off when you weld it.

It looks like the health issues have been covered, but here's a tip to get a good weld in galvanized steel (I've welded tons of galvanized for the past two years):
Flux wire tends to penetrate galvanized steel better than mig/gas welding. If you'll be using shielding gas, hit the steel with the grinder first, just to remove the surface galvanizing where you're welding.
The other good thing about using flux wire on galvanized steel is that you can set up a fan to blow the zinc fumes away without having to worry about blowing away any shielding gas (because there isn't any with flux wire)
As mentioned above, if you feel like you inhaled too much of the fumes are start feeling sick, drink some milk.
good luck.

Ive welded it before. I dont let the fumes go up in my face. I was mostly welding laying down dowing bodywork.. So everything went up. I was also i a large shop by myself, both windows/door open and a fan going.
I never once felt sick after doing it. I didnt weld alot just id say 4-5hrs combined. But not all at once. Thought the period of 3 months.
Cutting/fitting the custom bodypanells takes far more time then weling them in.

i used to weld galvanized all day at my old job... about 85% galvanized, 10% stainless and about 5% aluminum.... Drink your milk... it really works... but i can say after you do it for a while... it will take several days of hard core welding, switching machines becuase they meet the service factor and all before i get sick now... and i've done everything from welding outside to welding inside the 36"x36" piece of duct that needed to be fixed (5 stories in the air).
I found out the hard way. 1 infected lung that latter collapsed. The worst pain ever. Yeah so at least make sure you do it in a ventilated area with a mask.

if you weld gal for extended periods of time your teeth and hair can start to fall out :x and yes flux cored works great for galvanized
