Default replaced half-shafts now leaking transmission fluid...

My friend and I replaced the axles in his 91 civic. After we where all done he pulled out this o-ring made from a spring or something and says maybe this was important....

Anyway, now the transmission is leaking fluid pretty bad (only from the driver side). I told him it's probably because of that ring.... am I correct, or did we hose something else? Are there any other internal seals in there??
