What auto darking helmet do you recomend?
I am looking for a good auto darking helmet. I am leaning toward the miller eilte which has a bigger window. But dont know if its worth the extra $80 over the standard window. Any info would help. Wanna know which you guys use and feedbacks on it, Thanks in advance
I use a $50 solar one form harbor freight. It works fine and is comfortable to wear for long periods. I'de love to try a $200 dollar one to see what, if anything, i'm missing. btw, i use it for mig welding if it matters.
If you only we;d occasionally, then pretty much any auto-darkener will help, but if you weld often and want good eye protection, go w/ the Miller. You need an aperature that closes in the bare minimale of 1/10000 of a second.
If money's not really an option, go w/ a Hornell Speedglass. Mine closes in 1/25000 of a second. It's got great venting, a multi-layer lens, tons of options.
It even has cam that holds it up when you put it up, so you don't have to constantly loosen and tighten the hood.

Thankas for the reply. Yea im gonna be welding often, so im probably goin with the miller elite. I would like the speedglass but its to much money. thanks again

larger windows are nice but they arent that important, and i highly suggest buying a Jackson, ive used lots of helmets and the are my favorite buy far. and one thing to think about when buying a hemet that people dont usually think about is weather or not the helmet is solar powered or battery powered, cause if you buy a solar powered one chances are that it will go dead often unless you have it sitting in the sun during the day or if you weld outside. i would go with a battery powered one.
I have a Jackson. My only complaint is not about the auto-darkening but the mechanism to hold the helmet in a given position. Adjust it, it "droops", tighten screws, still droops, tighten more, still droops, tighten more, opps, stripped plastic threads. Buy replacement parts, does the same thing. I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.
ive heard that if u r welding nooks and crannys and hit certain angles some ways(i guess the light) that some helmets can blink off all of a sudden leaving you blinded for periods of time??anyone else with this problem?

Works great for me and has never went dead, had it for 4 months. I would not mind trying one with a larger window though cause I hate moving it up and down.

Yes if the sensor is sufficiently hidden by something between it and the weld. As long as you know about it you can *usually* avoid it happening, but sometimes I forget, <flash> "Doh!"

i will be buying one shortly, how much is the miller elite? i really dont know a whole lot about the auto darkening ones at all. any tips or pointers anyone would care to share on them?
The key is what Bishop4G pointed out above, the response time. Cheaper helmets won't react as quickly, and after a day of welding your eyes will still feel blurred and achy. A good, fast helmet will protect your eyes from that.

Yeah can people also comment on how much your gonna be looking to spend on the helmet you name.
Should I be worried or be concerned about this one, besides being solar.

It says it retails for 160 and closes at 1/25,000 and is only going for $60. Seems pretty good to me but what do you guys think.

Well, I just got the harborfreight $50 special and it says 1/20,000th of a second response time...so, I don't think the logic stands across the board
My eyes did feel a little fuzzy after welding for a while, but I think the problem is that I was hunched over, wearing a white sweatshirt, so it was bouncing back up into the helmet! Dark clothes are important, too...

yeah , build a cage and you'll see.
the tubing blocks the arc and the helmet goes out of dark mode.

If you're doing low volume work, then you'll never notice the difference. Manufacturer specs are a complete wash for this stuff, noone is going to test response and be able to make a lawsuit stick, so they can say whatever they want.

I'm scared of autodarkening helmets after I had one fail on me. It cleared between jumping sparks due to a poor ground for the MIG on the stuff I was working on. The inside of the helmet lit up like a bomb went off and I saw my own reflection and a blinding light. I had dry-eye for about a week and when the pain finally stopped it almost felt like pleasure rather than pain relief.
Makes you wonder how the guys on TV drive home every day... OCC shows those guys almost never wearing helmets or skin protection. I burned my legs to hell once after working on something for 5 minutes. You never see them wear jackets or anything. Maybe they all have skin cancer?
