Default GM Syncro-Mesh -- opinions

hello i was running hmtf in my jdm tranny on my h22a i have switched to gm syncromesh and there is like a world of difference no more grinds in the 5th gear shift while in vtec --- i have read the threads on the product but none discussed visocisty would or can this break down after a period of time how often should u replace it or can it be ran just like the hmtf i am sure that gm uses it so maybe they use it to hide quality issues which exist in there manual trannies or they just know what works ...

i'm using penzoil syncromesh (gm syncromesh is made by penzoil, but syncromesh in the penzoil bottle cost less... at any rate, its the same stuff). it made a huge difference in the feel of shifts and eliminated the 5th gear grind. i recommend it.

You guys do know that there was a TSB about that 5th gear grind, right?

There is a rumor that the syncromesh is harsher on the tranny's internal parts than honda MTF is.

Syncromesh is quite a bit thinner than Honda MTF. To make up for this it has a quite a bit more friction modifiers... Which in turn makes the stuff a band aid for the problem which is worn syncros. Thus you're wearing your syncros more to get "better" shifting. From everything that I've read is that Motul Gear 300, or a mix of Redline MTL & MT90 (though I had bad experiences with Redline MTL alone) or the Royal Purple but I haven't reasearched any of those much. I've stayed with Honda MTF upon recommendations from everywhere and just change it every 15k miles as it is a little shear happy. At $3 a bottle it's quite a bit cheaper that way in any way!

Yeah, the syncromesh stuff does help smoothen out my shifts, but I'm thinking of trying something synthetic rather than risking my synchro's.

I was getting bad 5th gear grind and some 3rd. I am now using synchromesh and have had no grinds and I have been running it for about 40-50k miles. Still no grind.

i'm using royal purple's syncromax in my b16 tranny (no problems) and my acura legend (eliminated 3rd gear grind[bad]) the stuff is thin like water, and it took a while for it to clear up the acura's grind, but that was just from topping it off with a quart of the RP.

Yes, there is a TSB issued because the 5th gear shift fork was not manufactured correctly in the 92-95 Prelude and 94-95 Accord, causing a grind while upshifting. That is why you see so many with the grind going into 5th. This was replaced during warranty by the factory, and was also eligible for "goodwill" replacement after the warranty was up, although I somehow doubt that they would still change it after all this time. If anybody needs them, I can get you the part numbers for what needs to be changed.

My first-to-second shift is grinding...where can i buy syncromesh, how much is it, how do i use it(just add or do a fully tranny service or what), and what does it actually do? any help is greatly appreciated. the grinding really puts a lag on my get-up-and-go...

go buy Pennzoil Synchromesh same thing as GM synchomesh but cheaper; try your local autoparts shop.

You replace your tranny fluid, isntead of using Honda MTF, you put this stuff in. What it really does is mysterious but it seems to flow better in the tranny and reduce the grinding noise coming from the synchros.

It's not all that mysterious... it's basically a thinner oil and just uses more artifical friction modifiers to help the engagement of the cogs better. Though at the same time it accelerates wear due to it's thin viscosity and all the friction modifers. It's a band aid setup, but will work. Just keep in mind that you're accelerating wear in order to get better shifting with this stuff.
