Default Fixing a cracked exhaust mani

how easily can a cracked exhaust manifold be welded? Will it generally hold up for day-to-day driving?

For some reason my stock manifold (D16Y7 w/75k miles) cracked!! It's the stupid all-in-one mani/cat converter type so its not cheap to replace ($490 list at dealer).

Thanks,
Steve

what year is your car? 96+ obviously but which year? Certain years have an emission extension warranty on the manifold. I've replaced a few under warranty. Ill find out the years thats cover tomorrow. Or you can just call the deal and ask about it

It's a '99, I'd really appreciate it. I've seen online that the 99's are replaced under 80k . . . . I have 75k so hopfully that's true

Thx,
Steve

80,000 and 8 years. I checked the warranty manual on my 99 ex and it says it only covers from catalytic back...piping from cat-engine is NOT covered....id call anyway just to check....call a few dealerships...u never know, they slip up sometimes

I had the welder here at work weld some cracks in my 92 DSM turbo manifold...I sold it 2 years later with no re-cracking...if it's done right, it will not crack again.

to do it right, you need to grind into the crack with something like a die grinder to get full penetration. to weld it right, you have to heat up the iron with a torch untill it is red hot, then weld it.

but then again you could just weld it, its not like you have nothing to lose. id grind it out first though, i wouldnt do the torch thing. pita.

here's an update:

apparently this is a common issue and Honda has extended the erty to 8 years or 80k miles had it replaced with a brand new one last week. It's a $500 part at Honda (it's mani and cat all in one)
