Help a swap noob out with a quick question...
I'm pulling out my D16 for another D16 and I'm renting a hoist for a single day (hopefully). I just need to know what I need to connect the chain to the motor (hook, bolt? what size bolt?) and what I need to bolt the motor to a motor stand (I know it's the same thread/pitch as the tranny bolts, but what length?).
Sorry for the really stupid question, but I need to have everythign on-hand before I rent the hoist and I can't afford to forget something that may take an extra day or so to find. Thanks for any details.

Don't rent anything drop it out the bottom. It's allot easier that way. Done it many times over, it only took one time to find out out the bottom is the way to go.
i waswondering the same thing also.... theres nothing to attatch a chain to like there would be on say an american v8( where you can get a plate that bolts tothe intake..and has a place to hook a chain)... so where should i go about attatching the chain from the engine hoist?

I will, but then I have to remove the tranny and mount the motor to the motor stand (and send the tranny off in the mail).
CRXBart,
I'm sure that technique is covered in great detail on someone's webpage. Happen to know where?

i read a pretty long debate on here a few months ago about out the top VS out the bottom. And from what i understand the safest and easiest way is out the top and in through the top. In going out the bottom you have to jack the car up over the engine which is really high. And i would say leave the tranny on. When i did my clutch we tryed to keep it all in the engine bay and that was a mistake. Lining everything up while under the car is a PITA in my opinion.
So either way good luck

I'll give you an abbreviated version. First unhook all wiring, hoses, speedo cable, ect. Next jack it up, disconnect the shift linkage, and pull the axles, struts, the front and rear mounts out, and drop the front x-member. Then strategicly place boards under the motor and set the car on the ground minus the wheels. At this point the motor should be resting on the boards, next unhook the 2 side motor mounts, now the motor should just be chillin there. Lift the car off the motor/tranny and pull the motor/tranny out. Damn that was the most dangerous thing I have ever done and it was really hard to do also.

You can use a 12mm bolt and screw it into the hole at back of the head towards the drivers side of the head. For the tranny side I just loosened one of the tranny bolts on the top towards the front of the tranny. I unscrewed it and stuck the bolt through a lifting plate and I screwed the tranny bolt back in.
I know that head location is the correct one, but I had to improvise the tranny lift location. But it still worked fine for me.

Ok i haven't done either yet but with the experience i had with the tranny alone i wouldn't want to go through the bottom. I personally will go through the top when my engine comes out
