Default arch welding a downpipe

hello everybody.
will it be safe to arch weld a downpipe adapter?

is arch welding good for high temprature??

p.s.
mild steel is like stock exhaust pipes right?

Flange to pipe? It is possible to arc weld that. You'd need to use an electrode similar in thickness to the thinner metal (pipe) and make sure to aim the electrode towards the thicker metal (flange). Using either electrode positive (+) or A/C would help in concentrating the heat away from the thinner material so you don't blow through (assuming it's like a 16 gauge pipe).

Arc welding is just as strong as any other process if done correctly. If arc welding can hold up bridges and skyscapers it can sure as hell support a downpipe.

It is Arc not Arch

Welding pipe is best done with a Mig/Tig welder...When you want to weld a fence or a gate or a frame for a roof then Arc is really used...You will have to whack the welding rod every minute with a small hammer when you weld pipe with an Arc welder...

A good arc welder shouldn't have any problem doing this. My dad has been arc welding for about 30 years now and has shown me how he can do things with his arc that neither he nor I can do with a MIG welder, like connecting two rods together to get 20+ inches down into a pipe. Sure, you don't usually have to do it, but its an example of how a good arc welder can do a great deal of things that people wouldn't use an arc welder for normally. I dunno what you mean by having to strike the rod with a hammer to weld pipe, wtf does that mean?

whay i'm asking this is... i have a hf manifold and it had a small crack.

a friend that learnd how to weld fixed the crack and after a few days it cracked again through the welding.

now i got it argon welded.

i forgot to mantion that the manifold wasn't attached to the engine.

The manifold is probably cast. It needs to be preheated and postheated. There are also precautions that have to be taken while welding depending on the weldment.

I'm guessing with "argon welded" you meant Mig or Tig. You can easily weld a cast manifold by arc welding, but you have to know how to. Whoever did it for you didn't know how to.

The welding rod has a tendency to stick to the pipe...It completes the circuit and gets stuck to the metal...At least I find it much easier to weld pipe with a Mig and Arc Welding should be used for welding gates and burglar bars...

Maybe its just me but I have a hard time welding pipe with an ARC welder...

Yeah, it's hard, and yes, it will "weld" itself to the work if you don't space it enough. You have to finesse the rod around the tube, maintaining the proper arc length.

Also, if you are hitting your rod with a hammer to get it off, you will ruin any rod you have left on your torch. The "flux" will fall off. Try twisting it off, or clipping the very end off with some dykes and cleaning it up later with a flapper wheel and angle grinder. That way, you can finish off the rod you have.

Yes & yes. You need a rod with the correct filler material and fluxing agents though.
