Default Question about installing brake pads.....

i just installed some axxis ultimates on my R, and my question is in regards to the metal bar (not sure of name) that is attached to the brake pads......specifically the inner pads.

does it matter if the bar is UP or DOWN when installed?? safety is obviously an issue i'm concerned with.

i noticed by the time i got to the other side of the car that when i installed the pad, my previous pad's metal bar was DOWN. and i had to install the new pad with the bar UP (unless i was to go and remove the new pads from the other side to switch them)

thanks guys!!

btw, what the heck are they for?

The metal bar is often called a "squeaker tab". Its purpose is to come into contact with the rotor when the pad material is worn down to the point (a thickness of around 1.6 mm) when the pads should be replaced. This makes the brakes start to squeal - intentionally - thereby letting you know that it's time to replace the pads.

The bar should be UP on the INSIDE of both calipers.

Leading edge No?

Trying hard to remember where mine were but would make the most sense for them to be up on the leading edge.

Uh... trailing edge.

On the inside of the caliper. Pointing up. This would put the metal tab closer to the hub rather than the caliper.

Trailing edge would be below no?

Leading as in where the pad touches the rotor since the rotor spins counter clockwise and the tab is at the top.

Now that you mention, I do remember where it was.

no.. it shouldn't really matter.. in fact, as you see above, .RJ says they should be up in the first place..

Doesn't the passenger side rotor spin clockwise?

Anyhow, when I installed my Axxis Ultimates, they had L & R printed on the pads to indicate left & right.

it doesnt matter which way they face, ****. as if anyone who cares about their car and regularly inspects it would even LET it go down to the squealers.
