Default Manual Belt Tensioner

How hard is it to convert from auto to manual tensioner. I am getting a JDM H22a1 in September and figured I should convert while the engine is still out of the car. Could someone give me a run down of how to do the install and the parts needed. Also is there anthing else I need to do once I get the engine? Thanks!!!

Yup, my rebuilder JUST did this to my JDM H22. He said that the write-up by 2.6 was PERFECT!!

Good mod to do!!

It says that the manual tensioner is off of a H23? I have blown H23 sitting in the garage so does this mean I could use the tensioner off of that engine or should I not be so cheap and just buy the parts?

I'm not trying to be a dick but there is no JDM h22a1. Only an h22a. If it is an h22a1 then to is a 93-96 USDM prelude engine.

Hopefully that was a miss-type.

Correction* H22a not H22a1. Too much talk about engine codes will really fry your brain.

take the parts of your h23... its sooooooo extrememly easy...you replace the tensioer spring, the pulley, and all the associtated bolts from the h23s tensioner, by doing mine, i can now do my h22s timing belt in an hour flat....i HATED that stupid *** autotensioner, even after i bought the 14 dollar tool it was a pain in the ***...im not sure what honda was thinking when they designed that

I'm waiting for an answer to this question too because the instructions in the helms manual for the h23 didn't seem to adjust if properly for me on my h22.

you tighten the adusment bolt..the one in the middle of the tensioner, then you loosen it.....rotate the motor three teeth clockwise or (backwards) and tighten it again...im pretty sure...im having a brain fart right now, its either that or you tighten it, rotate the engine 3 teeth clockwise then loosen it and tighten it back down, but im almost positive the first is right...it sounds odd, and it doesnt seem like it will have tension but somehow it works....

according to helms:

Remove valve cover (to make sure that engine is tdc)
Set engine at TDC
loosen & tighten adjuster nut
Turn crankshaft counter clockwise3 teeth
loosen & tighten adjuster nut again to create tension.

I did the above steps and it still makes that vibration rattling noise.

How do you tell if the engine is at TDC? Also which cylinder needs to be at TDC?
