D16Y7 Question
I have I '98 Civic Coupe w/ a D16Y7 in it. First of all I was wondering if this engine has any potential. I have exhaust (tanabe), and a AEM cold air on the way, and only 30k on the ticker. I know that there are a couple SOHC guys on the board, and was wondering what kind of setups you guys are running, and what kind of numbers you are putting out. I know that I would probably be much better off just getting a B18 swap but I have one small problem, my car is an automatic. I've heard that it can be a real pain switching from automatic to manuel, and was wondering if anyone has pics and or advice on how to go about doing this. And my last option would be to wait a couple years and find a EK9 with high miles, and performing a swap, but I really don't want to wait. Thanks,
Clay

Potential with that motor and auto tranny is almost zero, unless you want to spend mad money. Nitrous is a cheap way to go fast, but I am not sure how long the slushbox will take it. You would be better off just selling your car, and getting something with more potential.
Trust me on this one, my car was slow as hell out of the box, and now after spending 6.5k+ on performance mods I should be able to run 13's.
BTW, my car is a manual, so add 1,500 to that if I had to swap from an automatic.

hehe im in the same boat as this guy. I have a 99 Civic Coupe DX, im doing extremely limited engine mods, untill i can afford a B18B engine swap. There are a ton of things that i want to buy, but im not going to because i know that im going to swap the motor in a few years
You have some potential with that motor. If you plan on keeping the auto tranny you can invest in a better torque converter (which would cost the same as a clutch and flywheel) It just depends on your budget. If you put the same amount of money into your motor now as you would spend on a B series motor, you would be faster and needless to say very different. Its possible. I have a 97 DX with a intake and header with a 55 shot of NOS. Runs 14.6 with terrible 60 ft times. Very respectable and faster than any B16 or B18b cars.
Well you can swap on a y8 head and convert your motor to vtec. The block in the y7 is the same as the y8..the only difference being that the y8 has a knock sensor. The y7/y8 block is similar to the z6 and almost all internal parts for the z6 fit in the y7/y8. (pistons rods etc)
I have a y7 block with a z6 head and lots of boost...i am hoping to run a 12 outa this setup. I have run a personally best of 13.6 but that was at 5400 feet. I am hoping with my new setup and sea level i can get into the 12s.
So its not a bad block..but the head is crap. Intank manifold is aweful. Swapping to a y8 head/intake manifold and positive pressure and you have a pretty nice setup.
But for the amount of money....just get yourself a b18/b20 swap...it will be better in the long run!
b20z in your car is pretty awesome!!! I have a friend that runs a 13.7 all motor b20z non-vtec!! (hx_guy) really awesome.
