Default 89 hatchback gear shift replacement

i have an 89 standard hatchback,, and i was hoping to install a shift kit. however, the gear shift lever on my car is not like what i see in the chilton book. there is simply a rubber boot at the base of the lever, and under that a rubber piece over the opening. when the rubber at the base of the shift lever is removed, it is possible to look through the opening at the ground. does anyone know how to install a shift kit in civics with this set up?

if you mean a short throw shifter, you need to get under the car undo the 12mm bolt from the shifter and the the twp 10mm bolts on each side, they might be a bitch, and the pull it up, out and reassemble.

yeah, i know that i need to get under the car to remove the shift lever, but my question is _i really didnt make it clear_ do i need to buy a boot to replace the stock boot? the boot that is on the stock gear shift is just a rubber plunger type thing that fits to the bottom of the gear shift, and it isn't fastened down-it just fits over the base of the gear shift, under that there is just a hole in the floor, i can see look down and see where the gear shift assembly is attached, and looking to one side, see the ground.
