why do Honda cranks rotate in the opposite direction?
I don't know of any advantage of doing this. Maybe it's easier for them convert cars from right hand drive to left hand drive with the position of the engine? Not sure. But now, it's more than just the S2000 that spins clockwise. The last time I checked, all new Honda engines (the i-VTEC ones) are spinning clockwise like the rest of the piston engine world.
What would be needed to make them spin CLockwise?
Wouldn't you essentially just have to start it spining the other way when you started the motor?
I know its more complicated, but basically

I was reading something about some hardcore all motor drag guys who put a Prelude engine into a Civic. I guess, for packaging reasons beyond my comprehension, they decided to to make it spin the other way. I'm not sure what they did, I think it was al in the head, though. Either way, someone has done it, so if you search hard enough you'll figure it out.
You would have to new install cams ground in the opposite direction, rewire the starter and alternator, change the computer, probably change the oil pump and water pump and belt tensioner. Who knows what else...
