Default Engine Swap Help for a '87 Civic

Engine Swap Help for a '87 Civic
I have a carbed '87 civic, but I want to drop in a FI engine of the same type--nothing special just something stock and fuel efficient, and keep it auto (for delivering pizza)

If you could help me out:
what engine/tranny/ecu/etc do i need?
any advice or anything i'd need to know?

My friend has an 88 civic FI 4-door.
I have an 87 civic 4 door, carbed.

basically i want his setup.

thx in advance

You can find a D15B2 for cheap, but how difficult to install? I don't know.

This is the stock block that is in the 88 4-door that you are talking about. If I am not mistaken it will take a majority of custom fab work to put d15 into the 87. I could be wrong but I am sure I read it on the internet somewhere.

"zc swap or 88-89 teg will both bolt right in but there will be some wiring to be done."

i was also told this, but i didnt know if there was an easier way..like i dont know much electronics, what kinda wiring would have to be done

also the more i think about it, if i get any new FI motor, im gonna have to change the gas lines and all that crap fuel pump, **** like that, how hard will this be to

change this all over, to whatever fits in it and is FI automatic and good on gas, what all steps will i have to take to complete this project

i guess to make it easier, say you had an 87 carbed civic and you wanted a new FI motor and auto trans, swap

what would be your check list of things to do/convert down to starting the project until shes ready to fire up again

You can go with an 86 SI. It is out of the Civic Wagon that year. I did this same swap on the first Civic I ever owned. You get evrything including full harness. The harness will connect right up to you existing pieces and ou will not have to change anything. You need Motor, Tranny, ECU, Harness, Gas tank, Fuel Pump, and you need to run fuel lines. Take a pic of the 86 if you can it will help you out.

All 85-87 USDM Civic/CRX Si models are MPFI. All the other DX, HF, and STD USDM models from those years are carbed.

And to correct a few things that others have posted...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by rolledthatho &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">"zc swap or 88-89 teg will both bolt right in but there will be some wiring to be done."</TD></TR></TABLE>

Be very careful when someone says "zc swap" because there are many different zc engines and most of them fit the 88+ Civics/CRXs. The one that easily bolts into 84-87 Civics/CRXs is the 1g dohc zc, which is similar to the USDM D16A1 engines in 86-89 tegs. The 1g dohc zc is very rare these days and you almost never see them for sale. people will say they have a 1g zc for sale, but it almost always turns out to be a 2g zc or a D16A1 because their head is up their ***. For your 87 Civic the easiest swap is the D16A1 brown top from an 86-87 USDM teg which had 113 hp. Almost as easy (especially because you are doing the carb-to-mpfi conversion) is the D16A1 black top engine from an 88-89 USDM teg which had 118 hp. The biggest difference as far as swapping goes is that the brown top has vacuum advance ignition and the black top has electronic advance ignition. If you are doing the FI conversion anyway you might as well swap in an 88-89 D16A1 and get 118 hp instead of the 91 hp from the 85-87 Civic/CRX Si engines. By far the best way to do the swap is to buy a wrecked or otherwise low priced (body rusted to hell?) 1g teg that still has a good drivetrain because you are going to need LOTS of parts from it. If you buy those parts one at a time from a junkyard they are going to nickle and dime you to death. Go to http://www.redpepperracing.com and read the FAQ thoroughly, then search for "D16A1 swap". AFTER you have done that, if you still have questions ask them over there and you will get many more answers (and better answers) than you will here.

I have no idea what this means!?! I thought there was never a Civic wagon Si model and that they were all carbed, at least for the 84-87 models that we are talking about.

Good luck.
