Default New with Hondas... Need Help.

Hey Wassup Guys. I've been around the forums and never posted anything. Well Anyways here's my dilema.

I just bought a 90' CRX Si with the stock motor. (D16A6) Correct? Well i need to change the head gasket. I know most of you would probably say use the search option but i tried and it REALLY didn't solve my questions. I also didn't/don't have time to go pick up on a Helms Book for the CRX. QUESTIONS:

1) Do I have to take off the intake manifold to get to the head gasket?

2) After Removing the Valve cover, In what order, comes off next to get to the head gasket?

3) Do i have to drain anything to get this job done?

LOL sorry for the noob questions i just don't want to do anything wrong. As you can tell I haven't got the experience on working on Internal Stuff. any advice and Help is most Appreciated. Thank you.

when i took apart my D16a6 i didn't take off my intake manifold. BUT there is a piece under it that i had a hard time finding (the engine is still in the car) its just a simple plate. You will have to drain your radiator but oil i don't know for sure, i did mine but i'm not sure. And the way i read in my Hanes book is start at the edges and work your way in much like a tire in an X fashion. Hope it helps you out

You do not need to take the intake mani off. I drain my radiator but nothing else. With your motor you do not have to take out the cams to remove the head bolts. I highly suggest you get a maintenance manual(haynes, ect.) before you do this job. It explain the job step by step in detail and pics.

Just off the top of my head you basically take off the valve cover, timing belt, intake mani brace, coolant and elec. connections, and head bolts. Then have fun removing your old gasket off the head and block. I use gasket remover spray and lots of razor blades. This method sucks and takes forever especially with a stock gasket that has been on there for 150k They have rotory tool attatchments that are made to take material off alluminum and work great for headgaskets. I will use this before I do another head gasket. I'm sure I have forgotten stuff so make sure you have a manual before you go yanking your head off.

If you have any other questions just let me know.

Yeah that helped a lot.... I guess i do have to go get one of them books. Anyone know roughly how much they run about?? Good thing i asked you guys 1st before I went to go get started with the "yanking". So far right now I got the Valve Cover off and some hoses connect to the Intake. But that's for the INfo.

You can get Haynes manual at Autozone for around 15 bucks. They say Helm's manuals are better but they are more expensive.

Yha I have change a head gasket on the same motor, make sure when taking off the head bolt there are patterns that you need to fallow, plus you need to torque the head bolts with the right amount of torque, So i would really suggest getting the manual.
