Timing belt tension
I already know how to tightin the belt, I know the steps. My question is, the belt seems to be able to slide of the cam gears pretty easy, not that easy but if I take my hands and put some force behind it, the timing belt moves side to side. Is this normal ?
im in the same boat.. i was able to slide the belt both sides with some force.. then i try to adjust the tension once. and it was harder for me to slide it.. so i guess it got tighter.. i can still slide it but its harder than before.. i have to do it with both hands and with force ... the tension seem ok too me but im not sure.. i dont wanna have it too tight or too losse..
Now I have run into a new problem with the belt, the belt gets tighter but as you turn the engine over it gets looser then tight then loose. It jumped a couple teeth now to, so my next question is, if I get the crank pully and tdc and I aligned the cam gears so there pointing up and there good, will everything be ok ? I know the piston comes around twice so there is 2 top dead centers, but the one the crank and cams are not even ligned up so I know its not that one. Anyways if I align the cams, and the crank pully and then slide the belt on, will it be fine ? Also how big of a role does the tensioner spring play ? I am using the old one, but would a new one really make a difference ?

your link didnt work.
first make sure you have the correct belt for the motor.
what kind of engine is it, by you saying gears im suspecting either a b series or a ZC, but which one.
its ok for them to be fairly loose, you should be able to slide them on and off with some force, it shouldnt just slip off, but with force it should slide on or off, you dont need to worry about it slipping off the cam gears thats what those two little caps things that sandwhich the timing belt at the crank gear are for, they keep the belt lined up as it spins

Yes, I got a new one for the engine, the same tensioner that was giving me the problems is still on there but the tension issue is fixed. My main concern was, if the cam gears were out of alignment with the crank, if I set the crank and tdc and I align the cams, will I be good to go ?

wtf u got a new one for the engine...and u say the same tensionr THAT was giving you the problem is still on there
ok if ur using the same tensior just buy a new one, seems like u need a new one since ur belt gets loose and at times is tight

Let me reword that, the customer bought a new tensioner for the engine. After I put the belt on the belt would not tighten, after a few times of retrying to tighten it, I got it to work.

lol, ok customer bought a new one for the engine original, well I put the brand new one on that is still being used, there is only 1 tensioner and its new. Well there is an old one that got shipped with the engine but that came off right away.
i think i get it.. he installed a new tensioner .. and the new tensioner was givin him problems.. in other words he wasnt adjusting the belt properly after a few tries the belt its fine now.. right?

I was trying to explain it better, the tensioner is new. And I followed the instructions but it still was not working, I ended pulling up a little on the tensioner to get the tightiness I wanted.

how did u pull it? what did u use ?
how did u pull it? what did u use ?
what I do is, set your tdc and slide on your belt. turn it half of a quarter of a turn. then tighten the tensioner. check it after cause it might be too tight.
