Default Bad TPS Question

My buddy has a first gen japanese B16 inside of his 1988 CRX Si. He has had some problems with bogging and hesitation. It has never thrown a code till the other day, it was code 7, which is the TPS sensor. Now could the TPS sensor cause the revs to jump. They only jump when you give it some gas, and the car sorta hesitates and bogs, and every time it does the tach sorta jumps If anyone has some light to share that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Thats exactly what they do

Mine is bad and at idle it bounces from 800-1300, I really need to fix it

And after getting on it at 4K or higher it throws the code 7

Either recalibrate it which is fairly easy if you have a steady hand and a voltmeter or pay through the *** to get a new one and still have to recalibrate it

Well this isnt at idle, this is while driving. And when you let off the gas, the car is fine. Then when you touch the gas, it starts to bog and all that again. Before you could just turn the car off, and the restart it and it would be good for a bit. My guess is that it was resetting the ecu? Any more ideas?

Also, he has a VAFC2. And the revs stay consistant, but the tach jumps. And when it jumps, the car bogs. Its very weird.

The TPS sensor tells the ecu what position the throttle is. Now if you have a code 7, then your car is telling you that it is not reading the correct values it should from the tps...

So you need to look at the wiring to make sure it is in good shape.
then make sure the connectors are tight and grease free
then, using a multimeter, measure if the TPS is sending out what it should. I think at idle it should send .5 volts and at WOT 5 volts.

When you move the throttle, the voltage should go up or down in a continuous manner, and not bounce erraticaly.

but would this cause the tach to jump? when i say tach, i mean just the tach, not the revs, its really weird.

No, if your tach is jumping then, your tach is either receiving weird signals or interpreting them wierdly.

Ya, its just weird that when ever the tach jumps, the car bogs and hesitates and sputters, but whenever you let of the gas, its fine. And this only happens sometimes.

i would check the calibration of the TPS just in case. its simple to do and takes a few minutes.
