What can I do engine-wise with my 87 LXi hatchback?
I am approaching 200,000 miles. I bought the car a year ago from a rich kid who got a new car. I do not know if the timing belt has ever been replaced. The dealership said that is in the ballpark of a 600 dollar endeavor.
I believe that the engine is an A20A3. It says 12V and EFI on it anyway.
I have read the Guide to Accords and this forum's rules.
It's an 87 which will make it a 3rd generation.
It's quite peppy with the 5 speed transmission.
If I'm looking at spending 600 dollars for a timing belt, would doing some sort of engine transplant be that much more expensive? Is there even a more powerful engine that I could replace it with? Or am I better off just replacing the timing belt and continuing to enjoy such a reliable car? I know just about nothing about Hondas besides what's contained in the Guide in this forum.

You can swap in a b series and it would be pretty nice. go to http://www.3geez.com They can help you alot cause that is a forum dedicated to your model car. Just remeber to keep us updated on what is going on cause it is awesome to see older accords still kicking.
There is no way in heck that I can do any of the work myself, and having a shop put a (hard to find, apparently) B20A in there would prolly cost A Lot(tm). I imagine I'll just leave Zippy stock.

i saw keep it vintage baby......get the timing belt done..i am sure you can get it done for cheaper than $600...it's a nice looking car ...if you do want to keep it runnign an realible..keep up the maintenence and if necessar do a little body work (look for rust and get rid of it)....
how much did you get the car for?

I was divorced and next to homeless. She got the car, leaving me only with my project car (a 1968 Pontiac Catalina 2 door hartop with a 455 cubic engine bored out .30 over). I was riding my bike to work (about 3 miles so it was no really big deal.. although getting off at midnight there were many times at that time that I considered just swerving into an oncoming truck.
Then "Hurricane Elvis" happened (a bow wave storm we had in Memphis last year that really jacked us up good). The previous owner drove through a puddle that was too deep... he made it through, but then when he tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over. From what he described, the tranny wasn't disengaging. He asked me what was wrong with it, and I told him I'd research it with my Pontiac buddies.
The general consensus was that the clutch pad had soaked up water, and the cure was to put the car in 5th and try and start it to break the pad loose, then drive it for a while to dry it out. I passed this along, but by that time he had already decided he wanted a new car anyway, and his parents were all wealthy and stuff anyway.
Not only did he sell me the car for 750 bucks, but he let me pay him off 100 bucks a month as well.
That car, and that job, were both the foundation of putting my life back together. I plan on getting another 100k out of Zippy, and I'm going to fix the AC and the slight dent on the right side door (a small crease) in addition to new ball joint, transaxle, and timing belt. It's a great car, and doesn't deserve any less.

It's nice to have such a distinctive Accord.
