Default welding flange to cast iron

I want to go with an external wastegate on my greddy turbo car and i was wondering if it's possible to weld a flange onto the cast manifold?

Yep you can, although I;m not entirely (since I have not done it first hand) sure on what to use or how well it would come out.

Im not sure about the greddy, but a lot of turbos actually come with cast steel
downpipe sections. Not a problem to weld to them.

welding cast sucks, ok here is the deal use nickle wire, with gas (not to sure off hand on the right gas i'll ask today at work)

and the problem with welding on cast is the same reason cast is good for a manifold. it removes of heat very very fast. thus making your weld brittle when you weld on it... a good way to weld on it

1. get a oxy acleyne torch handy
2. heat the cast your going to weld on
3. keep heating the cast as you weld and after you weld to insure it's going to be a some what strong weld.
4. after done welding keep heating the cast for a few moments so the cast does not cool down to fast and become brittle.

Note: welding on cast even done right with a trained welder, still is not very strong but should be fine for a downpipe i would hope.

good luck son.

Some posted a pic in the forced induction forum of a modified greddy manifold, had to cut out some runners of the inside...

cast sucks to weld. the cast has to be the correct tempto weld, or the weld will be weak.

Someone told me it works best to weld cast, manifolds or turbos, after they have been brought to a couple hundred degrees in an oven, then bring the temp down slow like an annealing proccess in glass blowin.

Search the forum, I think I heard this on here.
