Can it throw codes? I have no idea, you didnt give any details about your car. And your silencer is not what did it. High flow cats are the best idea, if not buy or make a test pipe.

ok people thanks for all the help. lemme get specific. car is 97 civic ex. the cat is a 3 month old hi flow random technology catalytic converter. if it aint the silencer that caused the cat to go i have no idea what happened to it but its blown. its rattling in the cat . the reason i think the silencer caused this is i have heard that the silencer if left on apexi n1 cat back can cause backpressure issues. a couple of weeks after i installed cat and catback the bolts, where cat bolts up to header, were shook loose and i had them on tight. my car is lowered but i havent bottomed out and whacked the cat or anything like that. im wondering if i can knock out the blown honeycomb and use cat like that or will the lack of honecomb cause the sensor in the cat to throw codes? if i remove cat and use test pipe, where do i put sensor? i think it would throw a code for sure without the sensor.

As far as the bolts coming loose, do you have any flex pipe (can't remember what it's actually called) in between the header and that cat? A lot of people have this problem and either get the flex pipe or get those spring loaded bolts to handle the stress. If you make a test pipe for yourself, you'll have to have a bung for the sensor put on, but last time I checked if you buy a test pipe for obd2 they usually have a bung already on there.

yeah i do have the spring bolts on where cat bolts up to header and i made an error the bolts that came loose were the bolts supplied by random where cat meets cat back. i just replaced nuts with selflocking ones and its held on fine. im thinking of contacting random ive heard they have to warranty cat and i dont think i even got close to a thousand miles out of it let alone the 25 to 50 that at cat has to be warrantied for.

if you just want to knock out the inner material, you will not throw any codes. but it would be in your best interest to get a test pipe if thats the way you wanna go. having an empty cat chamber can cause you to actualy lose power cause the sound waves and the exhaust will "tumble" when they enter the cat and significantly disturbe the flow. im speaking from experience here. but thats just my 2 cents. if im wrong im sorry, thats just been my experience.

you wont be able to hear it, but you will tell a difference in performance.

if ou take the guts out of your cat and you have an OBD-2 car you'll throw a code. Correct me if I'm wrong here. This is the reason a lot of turbo guys go with the OBD-1 conversion because they can just toss the cat and run their single O2 sensor setups without throwing a code.

It takes about 15-30 minutes of driving to throw the code. Go out driving and you'll get it.

i just hollowed out my cat on my 00' ex... it definately sounds like my *** in a bucket now.. its kind of feels like it has more torgue now, and it backfires like someone is hanging out the sunroof shooting a pistol everytime i shift...(which can be cool to scare ppl on the side of the road) ..

ANYWHO! you will throw a code... at least mine does... just give it time.. it can take up to an hour of stop and go driving to throw it... but it will... sucks.....

P0420 : catylist system below threshold

something like that... let me know if yours is different... im going turbo so im hold out on a cat... was gonna go for the random till i read about your problem.. id like to just have a straight pipe from the turbo to the exhaust it self(no cat) but it will still throw codes.... if any one know about going odb1 let me know how much of a pain it is
