I would like to do my own swap, and feel confident enough to complete everything after the engine is bolted up. My only concern is getting the engine in. Is it best to go from underneath or from the top? I don't have a lift, or a engine hoist. Is it possible with the help of another person to lift the engine w/ tranny onto a floor jack, and get the car high enough off the ground to roll it underneath?

Should I just get a hoist?

I wouldn't try to lift it...too risky. Just rent a hoist.

 

It might be possible to do it from underneth but my god that sounds like a pain in the ***, rent a hoist it's worth the money.

The best way is to put the motor in from underneath,, but if you dont have a lift, you can pho sho put it in from the top. Like said above: rent a cherry picker

 

You need no lift or hoist. Just need a gravel drive way some 2x4's , jack stands and a heavy duty jack. you can do it in no time just be careful removing the engine and re-installing, use a board to balance b/t engine and tranny.

 

Dont think that sounds like such a good idea...

Yeah, borrow one from a local or just rent one for the day...Think they cost around $20 or something...

 

Dude, you don't have to raise the engine off of the ground until you lower the car down on top of it, no chance of getting killed there, u less you choose to lay down next to the engine swap. a light honda is very safe on heavy duty jack stands. the jack is just for lowering the car(heavy duty of course) and the smaller jack (transmission jack preferably)is for raising the engine the final few inches into place, the 2x4s are for distributing the weight on the jack stands on to the ground, needed for gravel driveways. completely safe but not as convient as a hydro lift to lower your car onto the swap, I'd never use an enginehoist and lower in a f/w/d engine and tranny. I've been building hot rods for @ 10 yrs now and do all my work in my dad's gravel drive way, the only time I break out my engine hoist if for rwd. It's completely safe as long as you remember to scotch your rear wheels.

I would get a hoist also. If your not experienced with Engine Swaps, or used the way showen above before, i will 100% bet that you will have trouble with the technique above.

 

You could also take the bumper off and radiator support etc. and roll the car forward depending on the size of the motor. All the swaps my brothers done is put the motor on some kind of a support and life the front end up and set it down, its a bit more unsafe but if your careful its possible. This works good with a eg because there light ***** two can lift the front. It's a tight squeeze with a h22 though, but its been done lol

 

If you have a NICE jack that will raise your car over the motor then your good. Ive done this a few times (D series & B series) Just raise the car...slide the motor under and visually line it up...Then slowly lower the car....

add H-series to that list... we jacked the car up and slid the motor underneath into my hatch... takes time but works

 

i did it to my teg but i dropped the complete subframe with suspension and everything alot easier, of course i wasnt gonna put it back but it was easier

 

dude.......i'd put in the motor through the bottom.......its the best way to go...too hard to take it through the top ...Trust Me man !!.......

 

definitely the hoist, i would say..

 

honda service manual says to hoist it and I think the people at honda know what they're doing cuz they've been putting engines in cars for a while.

ehhhh me and my dad didnt use a hoist, we lowered the car onto the engine, and it worked fine, hes also a mechanic

 

Lift it above your engine bay? are you kidding? engines are way to heavy to lift that high, just follow everyones advice

 

Are you guys crazy A hoist or Engine hoist can handle at least 2500lbs if even more dude use the hoist its much easier to line up your mounts and you don't have to stress about the motor or car falling and crushing you. Less of a hassle and not very time consuming at all..Owner of a shop.... Ask any owner they'll tell you the best way. Which is a engine hoist...They are pretty cheap to rent too...Oh and engines only weigh about 500lbs or a little more..
