Default Mini-me vs. JDM d15 vtec swap

My dx has the stock d15b7 and I have a couple of low cost options and I wanted to get some input on what I should do. I can get a JDM d15 vtec engine from a local junkyard for $370 or maybe half that if my friend can hook me up. I've heard that I could get a d16z6 head for about $200. I wanna know from your guys' experience, what would be the better choice? Price wise and difficulty.

Save yourself the trouble and get yourself a D15B VTEC w/ p08 ECU. I recently just droped one int to my EG and took it to the track, and this high reving engine rocks. I got mine for $320 and it was totaly worth it! Only thing is, with such a strong motor I will have to get ex/si tranny, so the car can accelerate faster.

So do they put out similar hp and torque numbers?? I read BauleyCivics mini-me tutorial and it didn't seem too hard. Would a full swap be easier or harder??

D15b is about 128 hp and 116 (?) tq. I'm puttin' one in my car, gonna boost it. If you do buy a jdm d15b get it from drew95eg here on the board great service.

jdm d15b more realiable, better rods, but less compression then tipical mini me. BTW around here I can get d16z6 swaps for like $100-250 (depending how lucky I will get), jdm d15b is $325 when avaliable, z6 head shouldn't cost you more then $100.

Also when you do a swap you got to factor in all the parts you will need, seals, gaskets (that you need to replace), fluids, spark plugs, waterpump timing belt (if needed), clutch, ECU, o2 maybe, soooooooooooo on. It takes some money but believe it's worth it, when you make a 18-20second car go 15s (you will need a tranny too).

the D15 would only have about 40,000 miles on it. The only problem is I'm kinda tight for cash right now. I will be until football is over and I can go back to working full weeks. I dont know if the engine will still be available for me then but if it is I can get it for about $170 cuz my friend gets a 50% discount. I was just wondering if it would be easier or less costly to do a mini-me swap because I've heard that they put out similar numbers. 113 torque seems a little high though.

Edit:I forgot to ask, is the ex/si tranny the best you can get for a D-series engine?

I've heard that D15b's have the same rods as a d16, so you could buy forged d16 rods and put them in correct?
But i also heard a few times that D15b's and D15z1's have the same rods, both of which are 3mm longer that other D15's, the D16 length, but have a smaller rod bearing size than D16's? So that would mean that you could not use forged rods on a D15B...

If that is true, could you swap in any other D15 crank and then use forged D15 rods?
Sorry to hijack but I figured I post here before making a new thread....this plays a huge part on whether I get a D15B or D16z6....And once again sorry to hijack

do a mini me. it would be less work thank takin a motor out and throwing another one....hope you can hook up the vtec wires to the harness...and blah blah , ecu, blah blah mini me is just a good IMHO if not better. i have seen some fast mini's they always do good boosted too...
NO DOUBT though, just to feel what you want....you will need to get the ex's tranny. or one similar. dx's gears are super long. So you will need to swap this too when you come into some more $$

The D15B would be/is my choce. I just orderd one yesterday w/ the Hydro trans: $760 shipped. It is more costly then a mini-me when you factor everything in, but I feel better having a newer motor in my ride.

would a d16 bottom with the vtec top kick harder/ better? also with the d16 tranny? i alway's thought the infamous "mini-me" was witht the d16 bottom with the d15 top block. is it a hard swap with the re-wiring and all? sorry if i seen to be posting on ur post.

Any non vtec D16 block topped off with a vtec D16 or D15 head, should have noticeable gains.
I'm not sure what tranny you're talking about cause there are many many D16 tranny's. The desirable one's are the z6, y8(identical to Z6 except steel shift fork, so it's stronger), the zc, and the D15B (same gearing as z6 but some have factory LSD)
No you basically have the whole mini-me thing backwards, it is normally a D15 block topped with a vtec D16 head. But it will work the other way around.
I have never attempted one, so I can't say how hard it is. You should most definitely read BauleyCivic's thread on it. I don't think the wiring is very hard, but you will need a vtec ecu, most likely you'll want the p28.
Goodluck

Get the D15B VTEC. Great little motor. The MiniMe swap is a great way to go, but the D15B7 tranny kinda ruins it. With the D15B VTEC you'll have the tranny that's geared for better acceleration.
Since you already have a D15 in there, you're just going to swap another D series in, and that's EASY, even with the D15B coming from Japan(just use your stock harness and wire the VTEC). I've done all of this so I speak from experience. Get the new motor, you won't be disappointed!

You know he can use a y8 or z6 tranny with a mini-me too right?

Just get the d15b, its a great motor and it'll probably be in better shape than your current motor.
