Problems with JUN flywheel eating my starter!
Will I run into this problem if i put in my JUN lightened flywheel? I got a piece of paper with it mentioning something about the gear of the starter not aligning properly with the teeth on the flywheel... anyone know about this?
It's caused by high grade steel contacting high grade steel. This type of steel is more brittle than the mild steel used in the stock flywheel. Whenever you have two types of brittle metal rubbing against each other, they just tend to eat each other up in short time. Aluminum flywheels don't suffer from this(aluminum = much softer than steel).
Only way to "minimize" the risk of this is to make sure everything is aligned dead-on.

I've heard of this problem from people on Hybrid and I don't have any suggestions for you but one thing....
Don't believe the LIE that you need a JDM starter.... it's total BS. That stupid rumor was getting thrown around the hybrid board - a JDM b-series starter is no different than its US counterpart.
....just letting you know if someone ever tosses that line at ya

Look at the teeth on the ring gear of your Jun flywheel. Are they square cut on both sides or is the leading edge bevel cut? The leading edge of the teeth must be bevel cut to match the teeth on your starter (which are bevel cut). The reason Jun's have problems is because some come with straight cut teeth. Those are the ones that tear up your starter. There is no problem with the type or hardness of the metal of either gear. I heard you can actually take a grinder and cut bevels on the flywheel teeth if you have a straight cut gear but make sure you ONLY do the leading edge.

I'd say it only happens a quarter of the time. Todd from JUN USA told me there are different tolerances with the DENSO starters. Who knows...
I'd install the flywheel first. You'll know pretty much right off the bat if you have the problem b/c you'll hear a high pitched grind when you turn the flywheel over.
It happened to me, but it is easy to fix. Just take a small grinder, like a dremel, and bevel the gear teeth slightly on your starter (you might be able to see shiny metal where the flywheel is contacting the starter). GOOD LUCK!
