My 98 civic cx hatchback has 102,000 miles. About 4 weeks ago, I noticed the engine would rev up and down. I cant say what the rpms were because it doesnt have one on the car. Anyway, this happens whenever I was at a stop or just in idle. About 2 weeks ago I was at a stop and the engine light came on and the engine was reving up and down again but it was a little more intense. I quickly drove it back home since I was only a few blocks away. I havent taken it to a mechanic yet because I dont know any good ones. As soon as they see a female walk up, they see $$$$ especially since I dont know any thing about cars. I have been reading some of the threads and I know my car is due for a timing belt change and water pump. Someone at work suggested that I take it to a dealership and for $40 they'll check the engine. I guess I'm asking for opinions on what you guys think it may be...that way I have an idea what to expect. Thanks

 

i could be wrong but it sounds like ur altennator going out. my cousin had that problem and changed his altennator and it was fixed. but im not 100% sure correct me if im wrong guys
