how did you learn to weld?
I took a auto body class at my local community college and they taught us basic tack welding. Then i found out my neighbor has a mig welder his not using and i borrowed it and just been using it and ask him questions when i dont get why it doesnt come out right.
Its really easy to know learn how to use it, i would take a class just to be able to use there metals to make things.

I'd recommend taking a class, but to answer your question, I had a friend give me a quick run-down on it and went from there.
You have to practice to get good at welding. You also have to use the "settings" table that comes with the welder (MIG) you buy. It's based on the wire size, thickness of material welded, and also the material type.
Do your first trials on CLEAN metal!!

Spent $1500 on a TIG machine and figured I better not waste the money. I watched the video that came with it and went out and built my first turbo system from scratch. Car ran mid 11s on a stock LS engine and old school DFI, so i guess I didnt do too bad for a daily driver.
needed to weld my downpipe, looked oddly at the mig welder in the garage i had never used before for a while, said **** it, and guessed how it was supposed to work
ghetto downpipe doesnt leak
though its ugly as ****

This is pretty much how I learned, but a mig welding class was included with auto body. It's been about 2 years or so since I have welded anything I wonder if I can even still do it

Work for a japanese importing company doing all kinds of jobs. They needed someone to also weld on the side. So, they hooked me up with a welder, told me to grab some stuff out of the scrap pile and weld it together.
You can read all you want but it just takes hours of practice to get good. You get really good when you concentrate more on what your doing and less on getting burned.

Just picked up a welder and started practicing. Read a book or two to get the basics afterwards.
Some of my welds look very clean, other welds need a lot of time with a grinding wheel.

Lots of practice. I saw it being done so many times I just picked up the mig torch and tried it. I learned technique from my own experience and by doing a lot of reading on processes for different metals. Anyone can get the knowledge. There is a lot of info on the net.
