HELP...
Rather hard to believe, maybe it could happen. The powerful spark has no place to go and burns out the coil ???
The coil should be disconnected at the primary side. Which no one ever bothered to do, including me....
When checking compression I would make certain that the transmission was in neutral (it was possible to do this from under the hood!) and then , with my switch and two leads with alligator clips, engage the starter motor as necessary..
Those were the "good old days"......
