What are symtoms of a bad 02 sensor? Can they only cause problems after the car is warmed up because when they are cold they are in open loop mode?

Yup... O2 sensors need to be heated up to about 600 degrees in order to kick in... Got problems?

a couple that come to mind: the gas mileage will almost always drop some, stumbling and hesitation are usual symptoms, but not necessarily always present.

what problems are you having?

The car stubles and almost dies when you take off after the car has been sitting and cold. It gets better as the car warms up but is terrible at first.

Just found your other post, but yes, a bad or "slow" o2 sensor will cause these problems

get a voltmeter and back prob the o2 sensor and check the voltage
