I once had a 1991 CRX... it was torino red, it was beautiful. It had no rust, it had a nice interior, and then it hit something. Hard. Now, it is totalled, with no rust.
I bought a 1990 CRX Si... it is black, it is beautiful. It has insane M4d vt3c RuSt y0.
I went out to get a quote for the repair 2 weeks ago, rust near the rear of the doors, abovce the rear fenders, under the doors etc. I thought "what the hell, I've got extra doors/panels, so it can't be that much to fix". I arrived, and a young man from a VERY reputable local shop gives it the once-over, I inform him of the fact that I havce pristine replacement sheetmetal, and he gives me the quote:
FIVE THOUSAND MOTHER-******* DOLLARS!!!!
I expected them to want at most $800... someone please tell me that this isn't a fair price, all I want is some welding/bondo!

how bout a list of whats included w/ that 5g price? Paint, primer, clear, how many coats of each, wet sanding.
My paint job (cost me 2g) by my uncle was a rust repair + colour change. He said it should be a 5-6k job normally.

That doesnt seem right. For myself, it costed me $350 per side for them to take off each rear quarter panel and to put the new ones on. Then it was $250 per side for paint...and all of this was in Canadian funds

Lets not jump to comclusions...That was just the estimate. The guy was prob
figuring in worst case senarios. But it happens all the time..I remember
whn I owned an '81 chevette back in college. Went to have the brakes checked
out after a hard panic stop on the highway. Guy @ Midas was like $1200.00.
I was like WTF..I only paid $750 for the car ( It was bought from a lil old lady
had 30K on the odom and was mint/no rust rare in the Chicago
)
"oh..sorry about that"..Hey if you want to sell it I'll give you 500 bucks for it"
No Thanks..I took the estimate and bought the parts and Had a local auto parts
chain do the work. My total was $450 bucks and that was even with me buying
$50 bucks worth of pizzas and drinks for the shop that day.

it seems a bit high, especially if that was a quote without paint.
to fix my rust on my CRX and repaint/color change it to black cost me $2K from a shop that i know the people, they said it was a half of deal for my family. so if you do the math, it would've been a $4k job.
but like i said, mine was with paint too. rust side of it took up about $1200 bucks (my price), so wouldve been about $2400 "retail" for someone else.

I love Texas.
Only problem we have is the killer sun fades/destroys paint like a m0tha. But there's no rust...so it's a trade off I guess.
EDIT: Spelling correction.

shut up.
oh, and im thinking you need to go to a different place, get like 3 more estimates, and if they are lower, go back to the first shop and ask if they will match the price. it never hurts to ask.

Sounds like someone's postwhoring.
In any case, perhaps you should look elsewhere for a better quote. Five thousand is a tad much, especially since your providing the donor metal and just asking for a bondo job.
I'd expect probably 800-1k.

It's the internet. There is no tone jackass.
AND if I were your son, I'd put a bullet in my ******* to kill the genes, and then another one in my head.
I think I'm going to get another quote when my car feels better.

Vash;
It's just not possible to say if the quote is reasonable over the net! There are just too many variables.
Here are a couple ideas and issues that you and others should think about;
Get several quotes (as stated in other responses). When you do this, have a written list of what you will provide (will you strip the interior if required, do you have clean replacement panels or just a questionable section cut out of a junk yard car) and what you expect. This way, each shop should be quoting for the same amount of work.
A reputable shop should stand behind the work. In other words, they should guarantee that the rust will not come back in a year. That means that they would have to do more work than the average guy that doesn't have to care.
Removing rusted sections is a LOT of work! It may require more than just replacing the outer panels in order for it to be done correctly.
So; what I'm getting at is that the price for the work required and liability behind it may be reasonable. That's not to say that it's a worth while investment.
