mashing of teh valves - whos broken a timing belt?
I'm putting a daily driver together. (#3 in the sig).
the car has an F22B w/ a broken timing belt. Although the cams turn, and the exhaust valves look good through the exhaust ports (I know that doesn't say much), I'm pulling the head to see what happened, and hopefully put it back together with another head.
Question is:
How many F22's & H23's w/ an automatic transmission have broken a timing belt, and mashed only valves? I want to get an idea of the likelyhood of pulling the head off, to find a few valves stuck through a piston. I have a spare H23 head laying around, so bent valves are not a problem, but I am hoping to re-use this bottom end.
any stories that you have would help, thanks.

i highly doubt that you will find a valve that went thru a piston, usually what happens is that the piston just taps the valve and bend them alittle to keep them from properly seating,
the only time you would trulley see some serious damage would be if the engine was reving very high when the timing elt borke, or if you litteraly snapped a valve off and it proceeded to dance around the combution chamber..
my guess, couple bend intake valves, and perfectly fine pistons,
rip it off and let us know
oh yea and what aobut that block your goign to help me buy?

First off, sorry for hijacking your thread, but I'm helping a friend with an h22 swap. He had the car going for only a few days and the timing belt snapped. Dunno why, but it did. I know that I put everything together right. No questions. I even followed Haynes step for step because it had been a while since I did an H-series. I torqued everything down to specs, tensioned everything perfectly, no mistakes. So I think it must have been a bad timing belt or else a bad balancer belt. My buddy bought his timing belt from some place local, but the balancer belt was a honda genuine. Not that any of that matters, but I get the feeling he thinks I screwed up his motor.
Anywho. I've never had that happen before, and I don't really know how to test for valve damage. Is there anything I can do short of pulling the head? Is there any chance that there's no damage, or is it certain? Can I toss another belt on there and check compression to see if it's salvageable? If not, what am I looking at replacing, just valves? Or does it have to get springs and retainers too? Finally, can I use valves out of the F22A that was in the motor originally? Any info you can throw at me would be great. Thanks!

Check your compression and make sure you do the oil into each cylinder method.
Valves are angled in the cylinder head in a way that any contact with the piston will bend the valve stem. I've actually had one look like an "S" and I've had some just bend slightly at the neck. To be sure, you should remove the head and send it to a machine shop for inspection.
