Default How to identify a bad bearing ?

What should I check to identify if a bearing in a transmission is bad or not? Should the bearing have some play, drag etc?

take the bearing in hand, and spin it round and round. you hear noise? you feel friction? yeah...thats a bad bearing.

Has it been brought home late at night by the police? Do it's friends parents call you and tell you they dont want your bearing talking to their bearing anymore because it is a bad influence? Sure signs of a bad bearing...

Should the bearing have any play? Or there must be NO play?

Should the bearing be oiled when checking for noises, play etc? For example should I put into a can with oil, pull uop and then rotate? Or should it be dry?

some of the bearings are tighter than others

for example the large bearing on the mainshaft, brand new from the dealer, has lots of play

the inner and outer races can deflect a considerable amount

which bearing are you talking about in particular?

Wow, thats alot of pictures

Ryan, it's not really that hard. I've had my tranny apart a good 5 to 6 times and I'm getting ready to replace all the bearing in it shortly. Manual trannies are pretty straight foward, just make sure you put everything back on in the order you took them off. Watch out for thouse friction rings as putting one on upside down will cause some headaches.

So, here are my pictures and questions:

1) All the upper bearings look like having some play:

2) The lower bearings - one looks tight (no play), but clicks a bit and sometimes, when I rotate it, it slows down and then stops immediatelly - like there is some friction.

3) My clutch bearing (don't know how you call it) has about 1mm play and is very noisy.

4) To summarize my problems: Noise when driving (just cruising) from the trany area. When I'm stopped and tranny in neutral, the noise is present at any RPM (most noticable at 3000). When I push the clutch pedal, the noise stops in about 1-2secs. When I release the clutch pedal, the noise is immediatelly there.

imo, if you already have it out, and apart. just replace it with a new one. even if its still good. don't want to take it apart later just because that one bearing went bad, because you did not replace it before.

Yep, I would replace all of them. Are you the one with the transmission oil that looks like water?

I replaced my tranny oil after 86.000 km. It's just a little bit smoother now, not much. I guess the old oil was still good.

#4 is the one that always goes bad, def have to replace that
#1 , brand new, has lots of play up and down
#3 , brand new has lots of play up and down, the outer race is separate from the rest of the bearing
#2 should be be tight, ive seen this one go bad as well, I like to change this one

and lastly, none of the bearings should be making noise

hope that helps

replace all if you can
if $$ is tight replace 1,2,4 and put a brand new nut on the countershaft

also, replace the throwout bearing ( the clutch bearing, as you called it)

My friend cleaned the housing with a pressure benzine, now it looks like new . The previous user used 5w50 oil for the tranny
