how safe to drive in rain with cold air intake?
its been rainging lately, and sometimes i get stuck in down pour and get worried about having a CAI. Whats the chance of taking in water if you just drive normally? Should i invest in a aem bypass valve. thanks ive havd a friend hydrolock his engine before. Id hate to do it on an R
get a beater or invest a little money into a bypass valve and then you wont have to worry about sucking up water

Wasn't it proven that the bypass valve will only work if the whole fiter element is completely submerged?

and somtyhing is better than nothing
your gonna have to hit a DAMN deep puddle to suck water into your engine.

IMO the hassle of a CAI isn't worth the extra 1~2 hp advantage it has over regular intakes.
HKS and Backyard Special are the only two japanese co. that I know of who produces a CAI system (where the filter is actually relocated to the fender area). I wonder why a majority of japanese made intakes are regular "under the hood" style.

The CAI should be fine. It rains all the time where I'm at and there's never been a problem.
If you're really worried go ahead and get the bypass valve. Better safe than sorry.

Dont worry dude, I used to worry like a little girl about my CAI, but nothings happened so far. Just make sure your fender liner is in place and if your going through any puddles, take your foot off the gas and clutch in or something. In order to suck up water all the way into your engine you need to be giving it some serious throttle.
I heard that youll get less horsepower with the bypassvalve. I forgot where i read this topic. Why dont you consider a short ram instead if you worry so much?
i got a cai and i dont worry about it too much. here in memphis it just got done raining for a straight week. we had floods and crap. just watch out for big puddles. i just swerve around them or if i have to, idle through them really slow. dont worry about the bp valve
I've driven through my share of downpours, and although I worried when I first got the AEM, I don't sweat it so much now. I have hit 2 bad puddles thinking I'd be f#$ked but everything ok. I have even removed the filter when getting home after a drive out in the rain to check the filter, its wet but doesn't seem to penetrate into the piping. Just be aware of puddles when out in the rain and you'll be ok.
Unless you are lowered so much that you no longer have a wheel well, then you will be fine. Think about where it is.. you'll have to be floating to get water in that filter.
