Am I crazy???? Considering getting rid of the R. Looking for advice.
Looking for some advice here so please give me pros & cons, I'd really appreciate you guys helping me see this from all angles. Here's the deal I have my 2000 ITR and my 93 Si, I keep the ITR at my parents garaged and take it out on weekends and for autox/trackdays and drive my Si daily and keep it at my apt. Insurance really sucks, paying for 3 cars (wife's car too) is really getting to be a lot (a little over $3k yearly). So lately I've been thinking about selling both cars and picking up an EVO RS to drive daily. I'm thinking I can sell the ITR for $17-18k and the Civic for maybe $1-2K and I owe a little less than $9k on the ITR so I could easily put $6k down on the EVO and have a few thousand left in savings. My payment would be about $100 higher a month but I'd be saving a great deal on insurance w/ only two cars and the EVO is cheaper to insure than the ITR (well the regular EVO is not sure about the RS).
Soooooo what do you guys think? I worry about the quality of the EVO, I know it's nowhere near that of a Honda or Toyota but they do have 10 year/100,000 powertrain warranty now. Of course I'd be more in debt w/ the EVO too. I can't really consider the STi because insurance is insane. Really just looking for opinions guys, please help me out. Thanks homies.
So far I got this:
Pros:
- Nice new car to drive daily.
- Great performance.
- Cheaper insurance.
- Warranty.
- AWD in the winter.
- Looks.
- It's a performance model similar to the R.
- In-dash 6 disc changer.
- Ugly Recaros
- No wing on the RS.
Cons:
- More expensive tires.
- I have to deal w/ selling my cars.
- Looks.
- Having to drive a brand new car daily.
- Have to buy new tail lights immediatly.
- I would miss the ITR no matter what, nothing could ever be as fun.
- Have to leave a brand new car outside until we get a house (at least a year off).
- Bigger debt.
- Possibly voiding of warranty because of autox/tracking.
- I have a warranty.
- Have to buy new tires this winter.
- No HIDs, ABS or AC on the RS.
- Not as exclusive as the R.
- I've spent a lot modding the R that would be lost.
I dunno I'm kinda torn right now, I drove a regular EVO yesterday and was pretty impressed. I don't know if anything will match the grin factor of the R though
Really the only thing making me want to get rid of it is I can't bear daily drive the R (I love it too much) and insurance on 3 cars is killing me.
< Thinking you guys will tell me I'm crazy and talking me into keeping the R

That's kinda why the RS appeals to me, no AC, no ABS, no sound deadening and LSD in the front. It's a performance model just like that R (well nothing is just like the R).

if you love the R so much you dont wanna drive it everyday, why woulld you want to get rid of it?
the new evo quality is alot better than the 2nd gen dsm's by far(no crank walk) and as raw as the Evo RS is having a no a/c daily driver would kinda suck. the warrenty for 10/100,000 would be nice just aslong as you never drive the car like it was ment to be driven and have it voided. i say keep the R, if you like the R that much sale the si and go buy another R for a daily driver.

This is all you need to know my friend.
All those pictures you've took of your R. All the blood, sweat, time and $$$. Nothing but love, keep the R.
You'll have it paid off sooner, which will be great. And personally, I'm not a fan of Mitsubishi products. Not to mention, the warranty terms and conditions they have for the EVO is rediculous. Also, check into the insurance for the RS since you only know the insurance for a regular EVO, that could change your mind as well.

Well personally if i were to think about getting an EVO for a daily, the RS might not be that comfortable for everyday use, especially if you dont get the package that adds AC/PS/power windows etc... If you could afford it, I'd wait till fall and look for the MR edition, which is a true R replacement and has many upgrades (6-speed, more power, better handling).
You should trade it for something fast, like a Sr'd 240...jk, I'm just also thinking about getting rid of my car, I love my car though, already running high 12's and I have hardly done anything to it.

you would also need to buy a radio....RS....no radio just like the sti...
the RS comes with power steering and a/c...the magazines say they dont but when i was looking at them they told me they only made 100 or less w/o PS and a/c in the u.s...if you go to any scca it will void the warrenty..i asked =P
p.s the funny thing is that they offer a free scca membership.

you have 2 really nice cars. the Si and the ITR. make the sacrifice and sell the Si for a beater, like corolla or something. that should already help you on the insurance. otherwise, it sounds like you really like the evo deep down and you are looking for excuses to sell the R, to justify you picking up the evo. if this is true, i've been there...just be honest with yourself.
if you do get rid if the R, just know you might regret it oneday, esp when you figure out that even though there will be a lot more nicer cars as time goes by, there will always be something that sticks with the R. something that wont age like the rest of them
good luck

This doesn't sound like a time when you should be burdening yourself with a larger car payment and more debt. I think the house should be your #1 priority at this point, then you will have your own garage to keep whatever car you decide to get in.
Why not spend the extra cash you would spend on a new car and use it to payoff the R more quickly? And perhaps see about getting different insurance, maybe something like they offer for classic cars which are driven only on weekends for a few miles and not for commuting. I don't know if this is something they would have for an Integra, but it's worth looking into.
Judging from what you said you want, which is a daily driver, I think even the R would be more suitable than an Evo RS. A/C and Radio and generally things I like standard, not as options. Maybe if you kept the Si as a daily, but that wasn't one of your listed options.
Anyway, IMO, you would be better off just paying off the R, building even more credit and saving for a house. There are more important things in life than your car, as you know. I would just start looking for cheaper insurance and save the R. I went from Honda to and AWD Mitsubishi turbo sedan (on a different scale however, I went from a 2000 Si to a Galant VR4.) And guess what i'm driving now? A Civic Si.
Just something for you to think about. It sounds as if you truly love your R, and would probably regret the Mitsubishi decision. I know I did.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.

CHRIS - do NOT sell it. You WILL regret it. Trust me on this. The ONLY car IMHO that is as fun to drive, reliable and pure pleasure to drive is E30 M3 (in the $20-$30k range & in sport compact category). An ITR makes everyone drive like a champion and it's very forgiving while being fast. Ask yourself this... have you eclipsed the car's performance threshold?

p.s. Mitsubishi is not one of the companies you want to pay mucho $$$ for their products. I would never buy their POS... and who knows, they might fold at any given time.

Thanks for all of the great advice guys. I've been thinking about it all day and I'm still not totally decided. I'm going to call insurance tomorrow and figure out exactly how much of a difference there would be in my insurance (I'm gonna check on an STi too even though I know it's hopeless) and I think that'll play a big part in the decision.
Gotta say right now I'm leaning towards keeping the R and keep paying out the butt for insurance
I just don't know if another car (that I can afford) could make me smile like the R does. Keep you guys updated
< Who's decided if he keeps the R he's gonna treat it to Toda A's

I would figure out how much each car would be yearly. I am willing to bet that the extra gas/tires/etc.. on the evo will be close to what it costs you know. You might save a lil. Do the math for a year and see what it comes to.
If my R goes, Ill be getting an RS as well. And if the R is sold, I know I will regret it especially since mine is paid off. But I guess it just comes down to how much money you have, and what you need the car for. I have a beater, and would only use the R or EVO as the weekend racer vehicle. My R will be put back to mostly stock (I think Ive had enough "modding" of my cars) and I would probably only flash the ECU of the RS and leave it like that. Even if I keep the R, I might still try to get the RS haha. I honestly dont see any major flaws in the EVO quality. People complain about the clutch, but when dropping the clutch at 6K, its gonna break (damn street racers). Its designed to break to protect the trans. I would also suggest driving one if you havent already. The car handles like its on freaking rails and the RS has the LSD. I could go on forever here
keep the itr chris. you seem to enjoy that car alot seeing that you love taking pictures of it and sharing your modification experiences. just like everyone else is saying, i'd shy way from mitsubishi. *BUT, i've never owned a mitsubishi or driven an EVO, so my opinion may not count.*
just curious, you have your itr as the alternate car in your insurance plan right? i suppose you could rank the crv as the primary vehicle, then the si, then the itr. you probably already figured that part out...but just in case.
if you do decide to sell the itr, be sure to keep us informed!
