I think I will be happier if i know how to drive Manual.
Just pick up a car (01 type r) that i don't know how to drive, stalled it a couple of times when my friend was teaching me... 1st and 2nd gear. a stab in the heart everytime i do that.... I am not going to learn on it again.
I know some of you hates me because i am a newbie and shouldn't own an R, but come on... everyone needs to have their chance... I want to be one of the best M/T drivers out there... just need some time.
anyone know any good M/T traing school that teaches manual in suffolk county, Long island?
thanks.

I learned the basics on my friend's 88 accord and later refined my abilities by test-driving various cars at dealerships (ie: wrx, rsx-s, celica gts) since my family didn't own any m/t cars. If you take it easy, the pressure to perform will keep you from f*cking up. The best thing you can do is practice, just not when you're tired.

you should have actually made a post on which clutch you should get...
Honestly. i would practice on a car that isn't yours or doesn't mean anything to you.

Definitely practice on someone's car that they don't value too much. I learned on my husband's 97 Civic hatchie and actually planned on keeping the car til I got into a bad accident. Then I bought the R knowing I knew how to drive a stick well. I would have waited if I wasn't too good at it yet. I let my friend learn on the R because the tranny and clutch were getting old anyway. It's just a car. I now have a 96 Civic hatchie and plan on teaching my neighbor on that. If for no other reason, learn on something else because the R parts are more expensive to fix if you mess them up. Good luck, you'll get it eventually!
It's just a car.
And what a car to learn in, you'll likely have loads of fun racking up the miles learning.
The only problem I can forsee is you then driving another Manual and being dissapointed with loose, slushy and or notchy shifting, crappy engagement and whatnot. The shifting in the R is a pleasure and effortless.
Look into a clutch depending on the cars current mileage.
Best of luck, I just drove mine to work this morning after about a month of not driving it. It's just pure elation.
It's a great car but just a car, and why not learn on a great car?

yeah, just get in the car and practice. you really do much damage in the short time it should take to learn. soon you'll be heel-toe stunna like the rest of us.

I actually learned how to drive manual when i got my R. Its definitely not a very friendly first timers car, with the lighter flywheel and stiffer clutch than most other hondas/sport compacts but dont get discouraged. I practiced everyday for at least an hour at stop and go footwork, and found a local business lot that had a incline truck ramp where i could practice holding the car up hills, which is very important for a first time driver. Nothing is more frightening than not knowing how to drive a manual properly and rolling back on steep hill. Once you learn the clutch engagement point, which took me 4-5 days to become comfortable, then it becomes second nature, and you move onto things like downshifting smoothly and rev-matching. If you really are paranoid about damaging your car, find a buddy with a beater M/T and practice the stop and go.
I learned on a 88' civic, then drove a 98' civic, now I drive a 91' sr'd 240 with unsprung clutch, believe me, it's very valuable to learn to drive a stick, but you should try to learn on a p.o.s. before anything else, especially an R./
AA its not that hard I learned how to drive a manual in a s2000 and I learned the hard way it sucks when you downshift from 5th to 2nd trust me. But good luck on learning. I love R's one day ill have another Integra.
its not that hard, try getting used to the point where you release the clutch and you start feeling the car move slightly. Try this throw it in 1st gear, step on the clutch all the way to the bottom, start releasing it very slowly. Even when it starts moving continue releasing the clutch slowly. Dont use the gas pedal.
Ya know, I've been thinking of doing something similar myself. I've driven nothing but manual trannies my whole life, and am actually considering getting a car with an A/T, Wadaya think, should I learn how to drive an A/T on a new car, or should I learn on a junker?

Buy my CRX! It's the greatest learning car ever! I have taught a 2 friends how to drive on it and it's for sale. Link is in my sig. If you have an R and are in NY then you need a beater or it will get stolen if you park it at a mall, movie theater, your driveway.....etc.....etc...etc.
Cliff notes: Buy my CRX and learn to drive then move onto your R and keep the CRX as a beater

Don't spend any money learning how to drive a stick. Just get a friend to show you the basics. The hardest thing, as mentioned earlier, is the uphill start, especially when jerks stop on your bumper.
To conquer hills, just hold the e-brake up with the button depressed and when you feel the car start to push, slowly release it a drive away.
The best advice is, when you start to feel the car stalling, give it a little more gas or just push in the clutch and try again.
Good luck.

I learned to drive on my ITR........... took 20 mins and I had the basics down.
I feel its better you learn on your car since its the vehicle your going to be driving.
Get someone with good experience and go to a empty parking lot and go nuts.

it might be helpful learning the mechanics of a car so you better understand how to operate the car. Before i taught my X gf how to drive my R, i taught her the mechanics of it and she picked it up in no time.
Good luck!
Good luck!
