newbie road race question
i have been thinking about getting into road racing. but i was curious how much its costing you guys a pop to race.
im just curious about the acual fee(s) to race. not the enormous amounts of money put into your car
also, i heard a while ago somewhere, now completely sure... that you werent allowed to run non-factory turbo'd cars in the same classes as most hondas. that the fact that you were boosted would put you in a class with bigger boys like porsches and vettes and stangs and such...

I'm not sure about oregan, but here in CA it's usually around 200-300ish for a HPDE/open track event. You can bring any car out there, and the class you're in depends on your skill and experience.
Your friends are probably talking about if you get into actual racing, then there will be classes and the rules vary. But you can to go open track days and run whatever car you want to. Be sure your cooling system is up to the task

Hey random,
My suggestion is for you to do HPDE's with your car boosted like it is and have a good time. If you end up deciding down the line that you'll want to end up actually Racing, then get yourselfe a copy of your chosen sanctioning body's rulebook and go ahead and build yourself a car. Most importantly though, do HPDE's and some Auto X-ing with your car how it is. Then by the time you decide to build a car and have one done, you will have had some seat time beforehand, which is imperative. that or find out how much it costs on this side of the fence and go crawling back to the drag strip
make sure your cooling system is up to par and you should be fine. PM me on HMT if you ever need any help w/ anything.

Random, good to see someone else from HMT is looking at road coarses. I have been working on Abaz for years.
We have Conference (ICSCC) in the NW as well as SCCA. You can run your car as is (pretty much) in the Conference Drivers Schools, at PIR with Cascade or Team Continental clubs. All of the links are at http://www.icscc.com/. The rulebook is online there, with a pretty good breakdown of classes, but you are right on the turbo issue though. Honda Turbos like you guys have will end up in SPM (Super Production), with some pretty fast company, as there aren't many rules in SPM other than displacement.
You can IM me if you have questions about other conference stuff, I would be glad to try and help.

i have an oil cooler and a alum radiator...
dont know if i would need anything to cool the transmission.. it has a little vent :/ lol
cooling the brakes? dunno they are stock with some decent pads.
the only thing if my tires seems to squel pretty easily around corners that im not really taking that hard... i think its because i have some really cheap tires on there.

I am using a 170* thermostat and an adjustable fan switch. don't worry about brakes change your pads out if you feel so inclined. if your tires are shitty, get new ones, but just get yourself some adequate street tires, it is easier for you to start feeling the car more with those.
It almost feels like HMT in here with all of us
Anyways, I was going to ask bamboo, have you done some track days with the turbo? Mine is off right now but I'm thinking about keeping it and slapping it back on after some track days. Curious what you're set up is for cooling.

The average price for a 2 day weekend, double sprint race is about $1,000. This is including entry fee, race car gas, truck gas for the trip, tires, brake pads, food, and hotel room. A full race season will net you $5000 to 10,000 per year.
Do a shearch on the topic, it has been covered many times over.

I've done a few HPDE's with the turbo and a driving school with it. It does just fine. But like I said, cooling system is a must, and an oil cooler if you can. other then that, if you aren't RACING you'll be fine turbo-ed.
Right now you aren't ready for road racing. There are alot of good suggestions in this thread, but I'll add my own. You need track time and lots of it to get an idea of where you want to go. If you have the budget, I suggest doing some autocross to get used to the idea of actual competition, and HPDEs to get used to high speed driving. Its arguable as to which one would be more productive, but I think autocross is a better training ground.
Stick with the car you've got now, changing only brake pads and possibly tires. When you feel you are a fast enough driver, worry about buying a race car for a specific class. And trust me, save yourself the headache of building a race car to start off. Buying one is much cheaper, and obviously its easier to sort out.
Good luck!

^^^ I'll agree with most of what he said except the buy a racecar instead of build your own thing. It's kinda hard to tell an HMT guy to buy something pre-built, we tend to build things on our own
