how hard is it to install a new final drive
i know how to drop the tranny and all that...but to install the final drive you have to open up the tranny...is this very hard, and it is hard to install the final drive components....does the helms manual have any great detail on this issue
I'll be diong the same thing this winter, although I'm kinda inexperienced... never dropped a tranny before. But I've read through the helms a couple times, and I think I'll manage. My only complaint is the detailed assembly page on the helms has shitty faded ink on it, bad printing job

On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the hardest...
1st time doing it.. 2.34456675756756
after that.. 1.14534534534
In other words, it's easy. Just be careful. Oh and.. the bolts holding the FD to the diff are REVERSE THREADED (aka left hand threaded).

x lots
Spray/cover/coat everything with MTF during assembly.
Also, it's probably a good idea to have all the replaceables (crushwashers, gaskets, etc) before you start, something I'm in ther process of getting now. I'll also be replacing the 3-4 synchro as both gears grind now all the time. Consider this as synchros do go bad with hard driving.
There is a thread on here (not sure which forum) I started that talked about what are good things to replace while the case is open. But I can't find it. Lets start a new list:
People please add what you can
Parts to replace when installing final drive:
CV boots. Both?
Snap ring?

There is only 3 synchros in the tranny, the 1-2 the 3-4 and the 5-R. I think that's what they meant by a set.
The 1-2 Is like ~$300 and the 3-4 is like $175 I think. Call Mike K and ask him 800-79-ACURA.

heh, yeah...
what dave failed to mention above... is that we also failed to swap the friction damper (item 93 of the countershaft diagram, between 1st gear and the 1st gear synchro hub) from the USDM 1st gear, into the JDM 1st gear.... now, if anyone knows otherwise, looks like i'll be pulling my tranny again after i think i've 'added sufficient friction' to my tranny.... heh.
and yes, i've filled out another application to We-Todd-Did racing....
coments anyone? i can't remember what the top side of the JDM 1st gear looks like in comparison to USDM.....

Ed, I have the almighty "Acura Factory" manual if you need to borrow it. It is my kept underlock and key but I could lend it out if need be for a trans rebuilt. Those pages are already stuck together
