90 Civic LX 4 door Swap????
OK Guys, I need to get that punny 1.5 that came in my 90 Civic outta there and want to do a swap to more horsepower. Budget very tight so need some suggestions on what is the cheapest way to increase power. This will be my 15 year old's first car so no DOHC screamers. Prolly too expensive anyway. I know I'll prolly need a new wiring harness, ECU and motor. Anybody got something like that laying around they'd like to get out of their way?
a nice A6 will do the job i think. and leave plenty of room for improvement. if the block and head is good just swap the tranny and change it over to mpfi and youll be set. nothin a 15 year old cant handle. and make him/her do the work themselves so they can learn.

I give up! What is a A6? I am really new at this stuff and am just now getting used to the B and D series engines. I was also told that JUST doing the MPFI on a stock 1.5 really doesn't give you enough power to even notice. Is this true or false in anyone else's opinion?

i can vouch for that. i used to have a crx dx and did the mpfi swap and really didnt notice anything other than all the codes my ECU was throwing (i was dumb back then)
i believe the A6 is the SOHC vtec head... im sure someone knows more about this then me.

Instead of rebuilding what you have I say swap in a nice a6 engine and tranny. If you have any cash after that swap on a vtec head and you're set for a while.
I wouldn't do anything to it.
I would let your 15 year old drive around town in it for at least 1/2 a year so you can see how their driving habits are.
If they abuse the heck out of the car and seem like they might be too irresponsible for anything quicker, then why waste the money into a car that might end up in an few accidents and into the wrecking yard???

The A6 is the D16A6, the motor that is found in the CRX Si and the Civic EX 90-91. A 1.6 liter motor that is paired with a sportier transmission and the power difference is hella noticable when going from the D15B2 - your stock motor. I did all the work myself and now I am mechanic free for my car repairs, well except for body work and such whats. The A6 can be picked up cheap, I payed 400 for mine with Tranny, ECU, and Axles, which is a little high, but it only had 74,000 documented miles. It also bolts right in which is a plus and the wiring is a grand total of about 6 wires. I recommend it whole heartedly. But let the 15 drive the B2 to get used to it first

Thanks for all the good ideas and recommendations! I'll start the search for a A6 engine and the other stuff. I'll have to find someone to do the swap since I don't have everything that'll prolly be needed to do it.
As long as you can rent an engine hoist, have a good assortment of wrenchs and sockets, and a jack with the usual jackstands you can do it yourself over a weekend. Save you some $$$$ and you learn something out of it.
Hmmmm. Well I've got a fair set of wrenches but its semi-limited. Could prolly borrow some if I don't have one I need I'd assume. What the hell, maybe I'll give it a try and let the 15 year old and me both learn how do it! Thanks again!
