i want to attempt this swap myself. what's the difficulty rating of this swap.
i have a 1995 dx with a motor that consumes oil like gas. Anyway, i'm looking to swap a sohc vtec motor from a 96-00 civic, but i want to use the same tranny off my Dx. How long will this take me. What other things will I need to perfrom this swap. Will i need the Vtec wiring? Could someone help out this beginner and list out all the the things i will need to perform this swap? how long will this take me and how hard is this?

Pretty easy. I have done a few swaps though, so what I find easy, you may be working on for a little longer.
First of all you need to decide if you are going to convert your car to obdII or your engine to obdI.
To convert your car to obdII you will need a new ecu, and maybe harness (unsure about the harness).
To convert your engine to obdI, you will need to swap injectors from old motor to the new, swap the intake manifold from old motor to the new, you will need a VTEC ecu, that should be about it.
If I recall correctly, your power steering unit will not bolt up to the bracket provided by the new motor, so you will be with out it or you will have to find a bracket compatible to it.
You will need a VTEC wire harness or re-wire your nonVTEC harness. I am pretty sure the majority of the honda-techers will say to just the the VTEC harness.
This should just about cover it.
If I were to rate this swap in difficulty in comparison to other swaps from 1-10, I would say this would be a 3, the easiest would be probably a swap with the exact same motor.
If this is you first time swapping or even pulling a motor and you don't really do any extensive work on your car, this will probably take you about 3-5 days, honestly, especially if you are alone.
I have done this before and it took like 10 hours with help.

If you have the tools, the time, the money, the spare car, you'll be fine. You get to learn about your car that way when you swap out your own motor. It's very fun, yet at times, fustrating. But in the end, it's worth every sweat.
