Default My first attempt at welding...and ABS progress pictures

Went a LOT better than I expected actually.

Turned on the old Mig welder that my dad used professionally a few decades ago and just said what the heck. It actually worked...who would have guessed. I need to grind off some of the lower weld and re-do it because I couldn't get a very solid bead, but you get the idea.

I think I maybe didn't have the voltage hot enough or I had it grounded poorly? I got a great bead on the backside, so I don't know what the variable was.

This bracket is to hold my ABS actuator pump in place. I had to modify it to fit my EF because it comes from the DC chasis. It fits very good now! A little grinding, a TAD bit more welding and I'll paint this bad boy. Not bad!

If you compare the above to this picture you can see that the bracket was significantly altered. I had to do a bunch of cutting just to make it fit in the first place, but now it's an excellent fit.

Engine bay will be painted by the end of the week...at least primered. I spent half the day taking care of some rust that I had to grind all the way down to bare metal. Thankfully I'm using a high-build primer so with a little sanding the big dips from the grinder won't be visible.

The black you're seeing on the frame rail is just some spray-can primer I put on to keep the bare metal from rusting until the real primer/sealer goes on. You can see in the other pictures how bad the rust was...that was from battery acid that had dripped down the frame rail over the years I assume.

I'm going to stop typing now because I'm pretty sure only a few people will even care

Cool, I wish my dad had an old welder doing nothing in the garage for me to use!

I love welding. Get some more practice with it and you can make anything.

Engine bay sanded down...Notice I still have to do the driver side...notice how shiney the shock tower is compared to the passenger side?

I'll be primering the engine bay early Friday morning out in the driveway...neighbors will love it.

did you use new custom brake lines or did you just modify stock ones? what knuckles/brakes are you using? ECU?

Custom brake lines except the rear that come out of the firewall.

I took those out and reversed them...the one that used to be on top is now on bottom. This made them line up perfectly with the Integra valve that I mounted in the stock location on the shock tower. I had to drill one hole to do so, but I was able to use an OEM threaded hole also.

DA knuckles, 11" brake setup. Axles will have to be custom I'm sure; I'm converting to Hydro D series transmission as well.

ECU will be a P28 (probably)...still working on the wiring aspect. I don't have an Integra Helms yet, so it's not completely finalized.

ABS in an ED has been done before

Because I want to. Not everybody these days builds a car at the whim of fellow H-T'ers.

Additonally, I'm a broke and jobless college student out for the summer with nothing but time on my hands. so why not?

I've got a loaded LX sedan...by the time I'm completely done with the car, it's going to be close to the weight of an Integra; I'm not going to buy the argument about the car being too light.

Yeah I know Ken has done the ABS before....I wasn't trying to say I'm the first. He is where I got the idea though.

I am doing this completely on my own though...I PMed Ken a few months ago just to see if his ABS works and to ask him some very basic questions, but everything on my actual install is from my own mind.

If you notice in his pictures he just retrofitted everything as best he could directly from the Integra. I thought about doing that, but it seemed like an even bigger PITA than starting over custom.

Very interesting, I wonder what kind of benifit you get with ABS in an EF.

When it's done please post some brake test comparisons, to see how shorter of a stopping distance you get with ABS in an EF.

Looks pretty good man.

I'm not worried about a shorter stopping distance. In fact, I don't think ABS makes the car stop in a shoter distance; the goal, rather, is to prevent wheel lock up - particularly in slick situations.

Thank god, or we'd be surrounded with JDM bling bling cars.

my fault, i forgot about the sedans. I keep thinking there are only hatchs and CRXs that exist on this forum

In a CRX or hatch. none.

you wouldn't see shorter stopping distances at all.
ABS just prevents wheel lock...which can be modulated with your foot. it's a handicap type of device that allows people to slam their foot on the stop pedal as hard as they want...without having to worry about pumping the brakes or "applying" the brakes.

ABS is great for icy roads and such, due to it being far more difficult to modulate your brakes in those conditions.

Jonathan, how are going about the wheel sensor issue?

Good question - I want to know what you're planning too!

The only major issue left is the axle issue. I'm almost 100% sure they'll have to be custom, but that's nothing my local driveshaft shop cannot handle for me.

I modified the DC wheel sensor assmebly to mount on DA knuckles.

For the rear, I'm using the entire DC trailing arm with all the sensor/ABS ring etc already mounted. No trouble there.

So all that trouble for nothing then.........

Since you have time how about helping a fellow H-T member modifying a hood. I need on with a 2" raise cowl induction.

What do you mean? When it rains in TX it gets very slick...the ABS will be a huge improvement.

As far as the parts....I just happen to run across a GSR in the junkyard that had everything brake-related intact, I figured I'd never get a chance like that again so I just decided to pick it all up.

I was actually planning on doing everything NEXT summer after I got money for the engine, suspension etc but I ended up never getting a part-time job this summer so I said WTF, I'll just go ahead and start.

Your fogetting where I live, MIAMI.

It's being raining here for the last 2 weeks, some crazy **** I tell you.

I don't remember the last time the ABS kicked on when I was driving my Z3. When it kicks on you can feel it and as much as it rains here I have yet pushed it hard enough for it to turn on.

I always ABS was always extra weight, but hey what ever floats your boat.

Good luck on the install.
